I consider Hendrick to be a big player in Johnson's success. And because of that, I don't see his challenger coming from withing Hendrick or SHR. So that rules out Newman, Stewart, Martin, Gordon, and Earnhardt. If I were to guess, I'd look for a team on the rise. Just a couple weeks ago, I would have said RCR, but now they have slipped back into consistent 6th - 15th finishes. So I'd look at Penske, Petty, and Earnhardt/Ganassi. Penske, Kurt Busch seems to have something and he's a past champ, Brad could well be good enough in a couple years like it took him to get accustomed to Nationwide cars. Also, they have Allgaier and Kligerman on the way up, two of the biggest talents in the garage. For Petty, Kahne would need to resign and soon, which probably won't happen, then who do they have left to challenge jj, Menard, Sadler, and Allmendinger? So only Kahne from this team has a shot, and he has to stay. Earnhardt Ganassi, come miles from where they were in 2008, but they need to keep it up. The two car business model could be the key, and Juan showed during last years chase he could keep pace, now McMurray's team is getting chemistry and starting to run up front again, so if the team keeps improving at this rate, Montoya could challenge and McMurray could but not for at least another year.

So, my rankings (Top Challenger to lowest challenger)

1 - Kurt Busch - this year and beyond

2 - Kasey Kahne (only if he stays with RPM) - this year and beyond

3 - Brad Keselowski - next year and beyond

    4 - Parker Kligerman - far out

5 - Juan Montoya - this year and beyond

    6 - Justin Allgaier - far out

    7 - Jamie McMurray

Those are just top team picks, not sure what teams will do well over the next couple years, but if things trend steadily, these are his top 7 challengers in my opinion.

Once the spoiler returns, I think Jeff Gordon is Jimmie's best challenge for the championship.

But I really don't think Johnson will slow down at all, he'll probably win more than 13 races this year, probably breaking Jeff Gordon's modern-era record.

Kyle Busch will. He is still young and has alot of years of racing ahead of him. If he ever gets on a tear like he did in 2008 with 9 wins he catches Jimmie and then passes him in wins before he retires.

  • I really feel that Smoke is going to be the one. I really do. He appears to have found the right set up for his car on Sunday so it's just a matter of time.

  • I doubt anyone can, no one wants to win and dominate like he does. This year looks like maybe matt or harvick but harvick will disappear with the new spoiler and I doubt matt can do it.

i think that there are many drivers that have the ability, but the real question is can they do it.

    kevin harvick

    mark martin

    tony stewart

    kurt busch

    jeff gordon

    matt kenseth

    juan pablo montoya

Nascar could dethrone hiom by stop throwing phantom cautions for him to win.
