I need to add RAM to my Windows XP desktop?

My desktop pc (Windows XP) is very low on RAM. I have RAM ordered, but I don't know how to put it in. A tech says he'll do it for $25.00. Can someone please help me save 25 bucks and give me step by step instructions on how to add 512MB of RAM to my 6 yr old pc? It already has 512MB. No links please. I don't click links...Thanks in advance.

Open the case of your computer.

Inside near the CPU u will see the RAM stick. (if u don't know what it looks like, then look at your new RAM stick and compare). If there is an empty slot next to the RAM stick, u just insert the new RAM into the empty slot. If the new RAM is the same as the current RAM it should be recognised and work fine with no further actions needed.

There may be more than one empty slot. If the slots are colour coded, then put the new RAM stick in a slot of the same colour as the current RAM stick. If the slots are all the same colour, just put the new RAM in the slot next to the current RAM.

Make sure it is well seated in the slot though.

Addition to Andy's post. There are small levers on each end of the slots. Make sure these are open (down) at installation. They will move up and click in when you are fully seated. Match the indentation in the RAM with the peg in the Ram slot on the board.

be sure the internet site document is on domicile windows controlled, good click "my pc", pass to "residences", then pass to the "more suitable" tab then click "settings" , then "more suitable" tab returned, then click "substitute", then "gadget controlled document" then click ok. additionally a fix to production unit defaults (often you're able to do this on HP desktops) might help using fact it might sparkling each and all the "rubbish" off it. in accordance with what you utilize it for, a sparkling pics card might help yet while it is purely 2nd stuff theres no want. it would probable want an AGP one and AGP pics enjoying cards are semi-high priced now. additionally doing a disk defragment (start up> all classes > upload-ons > gadget strategies> disk defragmenter) might help. That pc isn't too old and it would be pointless to purchase a sparkling pc except its relatively mandatory. A P4 HT "Northwood" 3.0, 3.2 or 3.4 may be a solid decision for a substitute CPU and can be particularly common to get 2nd hand value effectively. steer away from the "Prescott" ones, they run extremely warm.
