Is Blue Buffalo dog food really all that great?
A Blue Buffalo sales rep at a pet store was going on and on about blue buffalo dog food.
“Its so great, its got life bits, its the best selling dog food “ yatta yatta. But she could not really give me a REAL reason why it superior ingredients wise to other good foods. To me, it has a MUCH lower meat content then I like to see.
I told her I do not judge a food by popularity, amount of sales or “hype” I judge it by the ingredients. If
I just bought whatever people told me was best, or what sold the most, or what the vets/breeder/show dogs get, I would be feeding science diet or eukanuba still.
Other foods they sell are Innova, Innova EVO, California natural.
I was looking at Innova EVO, and the blue buffalo rep said “Even the lady that owns the pet store in town that sells Innova feeds her own dogs Blue Buffalo”
She also said that veterinarians say blue buffalo has the best vitamins… I told her “What do veterinarians know about nutrition? They also tell you to feed Science diet” <.<
I also have access to Wellness Core, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, Taste of The Wild, Organix, Halo.
SOOOOO many good foods! Price is really not an issue, I only have one tiny 2 lb puppy toy poodle so we don’t need much, nor very often.
Canned food, and raw suggestions welcomed also.
I use to feed all my dogs raw, but its really messy and difficult with this poodle.
Wow so many great answers already!
@CHIGIRL: Yes i do believe most of the blue thing is hype, and also availability (only decent food at pet smart for A LONG time) Now though, petco sales some great foods and more people are figuring out that most food is crap.
@Muttlove YES! I could not agree more! I really want to give my poodle raw, but its so messy! I would like to keep her on partial kibble for easy access when i go on vacation and when I'm at work (she comes to work with me) The dogs i had before did awesome on prey model. But my poodle puppy will not eat even little chicken rib bones.
@Nosaj: Dogs, even the tiny ones, are carnivores... i do not believe in "too much protein" All meat would be fine also, but my little poodle will not eat raw at the moment (hoping she will eventually)
@NakedPancakes: Vegetarian? YOUR POOR dog! its a Carnivore.... thats poor nutrition for a canine. PLUS ITS PURINA? Yikes.... crap in a bag.
@Stacey: WOW thats awesome! Also exactly how I WANT to use kibble eventually (if i can get my poodle eating raw)
@Mary C: Marrick sounds great, those things are very important too me. sadly I do not think its sold here. The pre made raw has crossed my mind. Maybe that primarily, with a little kibble and some raw meat?
@TK: Science diet is crap in ALL its forms. show me an ingredients list from ONE of there foods that is decent. does not exist.
@TJ: I have fed my dogs PROTEIN ONLY RAW PREY MODEL, like wolves eat. Next time you see a wolf eat some corn, potatoes and brown rice you let me know. Please do share why high protein is bad for dogs or any other carnivore?
To TJ and Hades Argument: Dogs are Canines, canines are carnivores.... you know what is a omnivore? I RAT! Canines hunt, like felines, like crocodiles, like all eagles, like sharks ECT ECT ECT. I have never seen zoo keepers throw a salad or a bowl of rice in the wolf cage. Not saying that grains will kill them, but it is not necessary.
HadesTheDobe: THIS WAS EXACTLY my concern! sure, the first ingredient was meat.... but NO were on the website or bags of food does it tell you the actually percentage of meat the food is made up off. Likely it is in the 30% range, just a guess. Unlike Innova EVO which states it is 80% percent meat right on the front of the bag!!
I even asked the Blue sales rep "What is the percentage of meat?" she did not know and just kept pointing out "Chicken is the first ingredient" <.<
TJ: AGAIN I have NEVER heard of a wolf or any other kind of canine eating carbs in the wild. In fact I am unsure of HOW they would obtain it and have never seen footage of this. They can not grow rice, they do not dig up potatoes, they to not bake themselves bread.
Again also, do zoo keepers feed wolves any kind of carbs? Last I checked they gave them meat just like the tigers eat next door.
What about this animal makes you think it is an omnivore?
If you use common sense the answer is clear, rather then let other people fill your head with there own opionions.

Blue Buffalo is a good kibble, yes. It's not the best kibble, but it's high above the rest. In my opinion, as long as you're doing some research as to what your dog is eating, then you're being a responsible owner. I don't know anyone who'd understand what is in kibbles and bits and still feed it, hence why people who do feed it grab the largest bag at the lowest price.
If you want to compare what is best in a dog's diet, the scale is something like this:
Prey-model diets >>> BARF diets >>> Homecooked diets >>> Grain-free kibble >>> Kibble with grains.
The last 2 of course are something to be looked into as so many brands fit into the categories.

It's pretty good but it's not the best. I believe that its a bit overrated. There are many more dog foods better than Blue.
The other foods that you listed, I recommend those more than Blue Buffalo. Yeah, I think that this whole hype about Blue is too much. It has meat as the first ingredient, but it's not entirely made of meat and veggies/fruit like some other dog food brands.

There is nothing wrong with Blue Buffalo. All of the ingredients are completley holistic. It started as a family business and still is. It just has gotten more popular. It is a healthy choice for pets, and it IS one of the most asdvertised healthy foods out there right now. There are alot of good dog foods out there and people fight over what one is best but honestly as long as the ingredients are all natural and no **** is put in there whatever. Every dog is different and there are 100 different foods out there to match their needs.

You are right, there are so many foods, and really, it comes down to preference and what you dog likes the taste of. I have just been doing tons of dog food research myself and I have decided to go with Blue Buffalo. But Chicken Soup and Wellness were also strong contenders. To me, they were all very comparable, and while an ingredient or two lower on the list might be switched in order amounts the three, I found them all to be great foods.
It finally came down to just choosing on preference (which might be a purely marketing driven choice on my part). Since I found all three of these foods to be so close in quality, based on ingredients, feeding amounts, etc.
I went through similar research with my cat when he was a kitten. We put him on very expensive food, one of the best quality foods available in our area. It was more costly than we ever imagined after 2 emergency vet visits and a couple of weeks of prescription food during recovery ... The food we had put him on didn't have a "kitten" formula, only all stage, which we were assured was fine for kittens. Despite my reservations, I figured it would be okay. This was the exact reason for the vet's visit, the food was too rich for a little kitten tummy. So we switched him on to another highly recommended brand that had more specific formulas for kittens, active adults, indoor adults, senior, etc. And he's never had another problem.
This experience has affected how I did my research for Dog food brands. I know to some it might not matter, but I did want a brand that offered a specific puppy formula, and for adult years, a small breed formula, since we have a Papillion. I know many will argue that these types of formulas don't really make a difference, and that it is more marketing than anything, but based on my past pet owner experience, they do matter to me. It's a piece of mind thing I guess.
Wellness has a puppy formula, and a small breed formula, and Blue offers small breed puppy and adult. Right now, I am still wavering between the two brands (we will start the 14 day switch over the weekend). One thing that stood out as a big difference is the recommended feeding amount of Blue is 3/4 and Wellness is 1/12. I know it's based on weight, and I could reduce the amount of Wellness, but the fact that it isn't as clear and it is recommending so much more, just sticks out as a negative compared to Blue. But again, this is all based on personal preference which is affected by experience, marketing, convenience (Wellness would be more convenient for me, but Petsmart isn't too far a drive).
It's all up to you, but you shouldn't knock others, since as you said ... there are so many choices, they all seem equal.

Blue Buffalo and Nutro are both very good foods. I work for Nutro so I'll give you a bit more info on the Nuto Company for your information :) Nutro is actually owned by Mars (not Diamond) and the Nutro company itself has been around for over 80 years, pioneering the natural dog food trend. Nutro makes all of its own food in Nutro owned factories as opposed to other companies that outsource the making of their foods to generic food factories. In owning its own factories, Nutro can carefully monitor the quality of ingredients and food batches with 600 quality checks per batch. Nutro sources and buys its own ingredients instead of hiring a middle man which also ensures that Nutro knows exactly where ingredients are coming from. I'm happy to hear your dogs are doing great on the Nutro food :) Olivia Pet Nutrition Specialist Nutro

First off it sounds like the Blue Buffalo rep needs to take a sales 101 course and learn that hype and half-truths isn't always what sells. The being said;
My dogs are fed a raw prey-model diet but the few times a year when I go out of town and can't take my dogs with me, I send them to friends or family with Blue Buffalo dog food. I honestly haven't don extensive research on dog food. Since I only feed it once or twice a year I want them to have something good but I don't need the "best of the best".
They like it and eat it with no problems so we stick with it. I actually feed them one or two pieces here and there and they think they are treats!

i don't like blue buffalo after reading the ingredients. i feed my puppy innova but will either switch to evo or orijen when he's older. they have a lot of protein which may be too much for your breed. I've looked into the ingredients of like all of them and comparing innova is definitely tops(and decent priced). The more specific the ingredients the better.
If looking into an alternative feeding style i don't like barf cause it's hard to find raw meats that don't have preservatives that need to be cooked out unless it is extremely organic. rare cooked meat is better. There is a guy that does breed specific recipes for cooked meals called the dog advocate. you buy a book for not too much and it has recipes for all life stages. I know people that do it and they rave about it.

We give our bear, foods we eat, prepared a bit different. Boil water shut off, insert enough chicken for 3 days,(remove skin?) and let sit for 10 mins.I don't believe in boiling it. This crazy lil thing wants to eat cats and squirrels...Anyhow. I add a change every few days, you will find some love carrotts, or use too. Some like a bit of apple, I think I like it better.A few almonds, loves em" virgin coconut oil,Slurp! I only give her max.tsp. a day. Well doneSteamed broccoli for a few days here and there. Vit K. Bones after I remove most of the fat marrow, I leave on the outer pork,or beef. She chews good and long on those. Good for the teeth. Fage yogurt,Plain". Once in a while she gets a bit o pasta.Overall, chicken and maybe 10-20 little kibble a day. I also cut up beef liver, into small chunks, freeze separately in wrap. I just cooked her piece 30 secs, or raw, Size of qtr. its very rich...she is 10-12 lbs. Stomach is golf ball size. much prudence, for the piglets.nospaceleft
Source(s): A sick bear that (I believe) began to get sick on a changed candidae. No more. I won't list the kibble, I have been giving her, as I am phasing it out. I believe shes better without it. Like a Mac Donalds burger. I think they taste good, but my body doesn't. - Anonymous5 years ago
Type 2 diabetes, usually referred to as adult onset, is when your body produces insulin but can not use it properly. This type can be treated successfully with the right diet and exercise in most circumstances. Read here https://tr.im/Zwl1J
If blood sugars are not kept under control at some point insulin will probably be integrated / oral medications are also available. People with diabetes can live long, happy lives but must be diligent in their care and make sure you see your endocrinologist on a regular basis.
