I'd be thinking along the lines of Hasselblad, Phase One or Mamiya for anything in the studio, or even on location.
But if I were going up a mountain I wouldn't want to be the one carrying that kit. I'd get a Leica M9, 35mm and 17mm lenses, plus a carbon fibre tripod. Leaves me space to carry food, and water, GPS, satellite phone, maps, first aid kit etc. At a push I'd take a Canon 5Dmk2 or Nikon D700 both with a 16-35mm lens.
Sports and wildlife, well thats a no brainer, Canon 1Dmk4 or Nikon D3s, and long lenses.
As you can see camera's don't do everything. Each has been honed for a specific job, but that doesn't mean that you can't use a Hasselblad halfway up Everest, or 1D4 on a fashion shoot.

I think if you are serious about photography, you should invest in the best camera you can afford. I have an EOS Digital Rebel which has different lenses you can purchase (i.e., macro). You have the ability to disable the auto focus which is a plus as you may try to take pictures of something and the camera insists on focusing on something else. There are other cameras on the market that are wonderful in your price range. Old school cameras are fantastic and lend their artistic merit! (I started out with a Canon manual focus camera from the 80's. It was so heavy... I loved the weight of it.) Investing in a nice Photoshop program is useful as well.

There are different types of cameras that do different types of things - different lenses - whether you want digital or old fashioned manual film - far distances - long distance. Really you need a variety of lenses and stuff to be a professional photographer - but to be a GOOD photographer you need an artistic eye, that you can't buy. You can take good picture with any camera as long as you know how to use it and have an eye for it.

The best camera is the one that gives YOU the images you want, and you won't know if the camera you buy will do that until you have been using it for at least six months. As the previous answer says, different cameras for different purposes.

"best" is just a word, there is no "best" camera, the "best" camera is the one that fits comfortably in your hands, the one that offers the features you need, and the one that fits your budget.
but a REALLY good DSLR for the price is the Pentax K-x, tons of features, compact design, and cheap.

There is no best camera, it all depends on you. Sounds like you aren't worth a crap! Get a life.
