Tasmania Job Options?
My wife and I are thinking of moving to Tasmania sometime over the next several years. We are wondering what the job situation is like and which areas have the best oppourtunities for work. I'm currently working in community services and my wife is just after something unskilled like pick packing. We've looked through the usual job sites like Seek, but would love to hear what someone actually there has to say. Also there is a rumour that Tasmanian employers won't employ mainlanders or unoffically discriminate agaisnt mainlanders, is this at all true or jst bs like so many other rumours?

The State government is the biggest employer in the state the jobs are published each Wednesday on the government website, if you haven't been in government before you must read the ad carefully and include with your resume a response to criteria set out in the Statement of Duties and the application form without this you will not be considered. As you are in the community sector Health & Human services would be the best place to look for you, also the related care sector is always looking for staff
Yes there is a slight prejudice against employing non locals, at times its a simple as already knowing another applicant (1 degree of separation). I found that having a local address overcame much of this when we moved here 5 years ago

Most activities concentrate in and around Launceston or Hobart. I must say that looking in other places can be pretty hard as businesses are held by locals and distances are big. I don't think the people would discriminate agains mainlanders but you might have to adapt to a different way of life.
Maybe you should visit the Salamanca markets in Hobart and try asking for information among the people selling their products.
