Hooking up a laptop to a tv?

I have a dell laptop with an hdmi hook up and a 15 pin VGA. The hdmi should be able to hook up video and audio correct. I shouldn't need to use the 15 pin VGA or should i use both.

When I tried hooking up just the hdmi i had video and no audio. thanks.

Update:

I tried doing what waqs suggested. when i go to playback i have sanyo lcd, speakers/headphones and independent headphones are my options.

Update 2:

You need to set HDMI as the default audio source.

    In Win7 & Vista:

    1) Right-click the speaker/volume icon in the system tray (bottom right side of screen)

    2) Click "Playback Devices"

    3) Right-click on the HDMI Output that's listed

    4) Click "Set as Default Device"

If you had the application that's playing the audio open already you'll have to restart it.
