Grand Canyon....South Rim? or West Rim?
trying to plan a day trip to the Grand Canyon. I've been to the South Rim once before and it is absolutely breathtaking! now I have 2 people who have never been, and we want to make it in one day. I'm wondering if the West Rim is just as good since it's a lot closer of a drive from Vegas. We're not planning on doing the Skywalk so that is definitely not a deciding factor. I'm wondering if there are other things to do besides the Skywalk?

The West rim will be a waste of your time. Take your friends to the more scenic South Rim. It might be further away from Vegas but well worth the trip. Here are some 50% deals to the South Rim

The West Rim is actually not exactly part of the Grand Canyon. It is a tributary canyon that runs into the Grand Canyon and is not as dramatic. However it does have an advantage if you like helicopters which are allowed to go beneath the ground level of the West Rim.
For the South and North rims, you are prohibited from any kind of flight into the canyon which means you can only see it from a ride or walk into the canyon or above it from an aircraft.
I love helicopters so for me it was pretty neat to go into the West Rim. However, if you are looking at just the views, the South Rim is the best followed closely by the North Rim (when it is open to the public). Although the West Rim is a lot closer there is less to see and take in.

As others have said the West Rim is not the Grand Canyon it is a rip off and not worth the trip, also although it is much closer the journey time by road is notmuch shorter as you have about 15 miles on an unmade track that takes and age. The North Rim is not doable in a day from Vegas it is just too far so South rim it must be

If you want to see the real Grand Canyon go to the South Rim Rim of the park. The part of the GC that is most advertised, is on an Indian Reservation at the extreme West of the canyon. There are really lots of places that you can see easily on way to the South Rim. Lake Mead http://vegasnature.com/LakeMead.htm Hoover Dam http://vegasnature.com/HooverDam.htm Colorado River http://vegasnature.com/ColoradoRiver.htm Oatman http://vegasnature.com/Oatman.htm Grand Canyon http://vegasnature.com/GrandCanyon.htm on the way back stop in Laughlin http://vegasnature.com/Laughl

If the previous answers don't sway you, just keep in mind that you are charged for everything at the "West Rim" including taking pictures. It's not just the skywalk. The feeling of being fleeced will often spoil the trip for you.
The best thing is to make it an overnight, but the all day trip is fine.

Simon W is wrong
The North and South Rims of GCNP are equidistant from LAS with the trip to the North Rim being the faster of the two

At any rate waste neither a minute of your time or a penny of your money going to the so-called West Rim

SKIP THE WEST RIM... ESPECIALLY IF YOU WONT GO TO THE SKY WALK. YOU HAVE TO PAY JUST TO DRIVE ALL THE WAY OUT THERE PAY TO GO ON THE SKY WALK & YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TAKE PIX YOU MUST BUY THEIR OVER PRICED ONES. GO ENJOY THE BREATHTAKING VIWS ON TH SOUTH RIM OR TAKE THE EXTRA 2 HOURS & VISIT THE NORTH RIM... WE PREFER IT. (LESS PEOPLE & MORE WILDLIFE)
