mixing dog breeds - what do you recommend?

I have a lhasa apso/ japanese chin that I want to breed, can you recommend some breeds that would be a good mix? Thank you

Update:

Additional information - my dog is a very wonderful incredible dog but has a limited life span of 8 years. We want to have another dog from her. We already have homes waiting on her puppies as she is such an incredible dog. Her vet is on board with getting her pregnant and has suggested some breeds already. She will be boarded in her final pregnancy days, and the vet will supervise the delivery to ensure that everything goes well. We don't want to risk losing our dog. So please, if all you have is negative to say, please don't contribute. We are responsible adults looking to reproduce a wonderful dog. I was looking for suggestions if someone has mixed with the lhasa/japanese mix before.

Update 2:

oh and she is not a Mutt, she is a hybrid, and if you are keeping up with the jones, hybrid dogs are more in demand than straight purebreds.

I would recommend you do some online research about breeding first. There is more to it than just getting your dog pregnant. She needs to be 2 to 3 years old before you breed her. You would have to have test done on her to make sure she is healthy. While she is pregnant you would need to take her for regular checkups. Not all small dogs have easy pregnancies. You need to be prepared to spend up to $2000.00 dollars for a c-section if there are complications. Then there is the trip to the vet after the puppies are born. Worming, shots and finding good homes.

Then you have to find the male. You have to have a guarantee that he is healthy too and pay the stud fee. Breeding is not cheap if it is done correctly.

Is there a reason you want to bring more puppies into the world, when there are already too many homeless dogs out there? Really? And breeding a cross breed? That's like breeding for the hell of it. Just for a laugh.

Do you know exactly who the puppies will go to, and do you have more than enough homes ready and waiting...

What if the dog has 8 puppies, but you have only got 5 homes? Are you going to keep the other 3, or take them to a rescue (which is probably already full up with dogs and puppies, thus adding to the homeless problem), or are you going to dump the puppies left over, somewhere?

Also, have you thought about what you will do if the ***** goes into labour early, or if their are problems during the birth? Are you a vet (i doubt it), or do you have a vets nearby that are on call 24/7? What if your dog dies, because of your selfishness?

Think again about breeding, please. It isn't fair. Get the dog spayed/neutered, and just keep it as a loving, family pet. Backyard breeding is never a good idea. Honest...

You dont breed her to anything.

She is a mutt, not a hybrid. A hybrid animal is the result of breeding 2 different species. ALL dogs are the SAME SPECIE. A mutt is a mix of 2 or more breeds.

Only crappy breeders coin the term "hybrid" just so they can rip people off. No one in their right mind pays money for a mixed breed dog, because the SAME THING can be found in any shelter.

Vet is on board with it because the vet knows he's going to gain a profit from the pregnancy.

If she really is limited to a lifespan of 8 years, then she definantly SHOULD NOT be bred. If you dont want to risk loosing her, then GET HER SPAYED.

Responsible adults do not breed mutts.

  • 1.) You're a horrible excuse for a backyard breeder. At least most back yard breeders have mostly pure bred animals.

2.) She's a small breed, and most small breeds are known for difficult labors, and C-Sections, so I hope you have a good $2,000 in the bank for this possibility, and for any other vet costs she'll have.

3.) Get her spayed, NOW. Stop breeding MUTTS, there's PLENTY of those just wasting away in shelters already. Go to petfinder.com and look up those two breeds, see how many mixes you come across. I guarantee, there's plenty of them. There's NO reason for her to be intact, and there's even LESS reason for you to try and add to an already out of control overpopulation problem

ETA: Great suggestion, KIM! Absolutley wonderful!! Now, if his dog is the FEMALE, and he goes with your suggestion, you've just cased the unecessary DEATH of an innocent dog. God help your dogs if you happen to own any!

Find another mutt - maybe a Great Dane Wiener dog cross

Really - Have the dog fixed, and go to the shelter and volunteer some time so you truly understand the trouble the dog industry is in from people who think that every cute little dog needs to make more of themselves

There is no need to play mad scientist and add to the pet overpopulation problem. I recommend you fix your dog and then have a look at all the mixes that sit in shelters and/or are euthanized daily.

Zero. Mixing breeds is a rotten idea. This is what fills the shelters.

Only mix breeds to improve the health and quality of life, DO NOT breed them because the are smaller and cuter. I hate the idea, but I know many people don't take advise on not breeding a mix...a good example of excellent crosses is the puggle.

Why would you want to breed a mutt? There are plenty in shelters as it is. Just spay/neuter your dog!

Responsible owners don't breed their dogs, the spay or neuter them.

    Only BYBers breed mutts.
