What is behind his head in this picture?

There's a big grey area, as if he'd been poorly photoshopped into the photo. Any idea what that is?

    The black "halo" is presumably intended to make the head stand out better. (Not uncommon at the time for photos inteneded to be reproduced via low resolution newsprint wire photos). It says it right below the picture.

    more like poor darkroom work.......

    perhaps they replaced his top half in that image in the darkroom - - badly

    thats all i can think of, good question a star for you
