Is the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) legit?

I'm not sure it's asking for a payment of 60$ and few of my friends with terrible grades got them too.

It's one of the many societies that exist solely to collect membership fees. It won't do anything for your college application.

I'm a member. I got a fanciful certificate and membership card from them when I joined. You also get cords to wear at graduation (though my school wouldn't allow me to wear them..). It's definitely not a scam. They send out monthly letters, have membership functions all the time, and offer tons of scholarship opportunities. It's just how much you think you'll use it? It looks good on scholarship applications, but honestly that's the only thing I used it for. I don't plan on ever going to any of the functions they hold (which usually involve some super cool CIA training session) and I don't plan on sending them any more money if they were to ever ask. It is founded by Claes Nobel, the creator of the Nobel prize, and he's usually in attendance of every meeting. The induction ceremony is in Washington DC, so I didn't go. So basically, I just joined so it would look good on scholarships. Got a t-shirt and a sticker for my car too. It's just up to you how much you think you'd use it, though at your age, it wouldn't make any difference. It would be more beneficial your senior year. Hope this helped!

The National Society of High School Scholars, or NSHSS, was founded in 2002 by Claes Nobel to recognize high school students and offer scholarships and annual academic competitions. Members normally pay a membership fee, which can be waived, and must be a 2nd semester sophomore, junior, or senior in high school with at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA to join. It is open to students in both traditional and non-traditional high schools including homeschooling.

The organization allows the membership fee to be waived for families suffering financial hardship. The organization has formed a partnership with the National Association for College Admission Counseling's National College Fairs Program to encourage students to attend college fairs and connect with university representatives.

Abercrombie & Fitch has partnered with the society to provide an additional $75,000 in scholarships. The NSHSS is a private organization, and is not affiliated with the National Honor Society.

Save your money and ignore them. They send those invites to just about anyone, but the organization doesn't actually do anything.
