Consumer electronics using a router?

Okay, I installed a new wireless router yesterday. When I tried to test it out using my DS, the handheld could find the connection, but the router could never find it. I"m guessing that's because it probably wasn't made to be put into a wireless network so much as simply use a router (the DS). My dad's laptop for work had no problem being found.

The question is, how can I use my DS/Wii for online play if the router isn't able to recognize it? I don't want to disable all of the security locks, but will I have to?

Using a Linksys by Cisco, by the way.

A DS just connects to the nearest open Wi-Fi network, but won't show up a traffic on the network. With the Wii, you have to select a Wi-Fi network, but it won't show either.
