currently there is no provision in the tax code for a windfall profits tax. there has been talk of one for many years though, mostly for the oil companies, and the pharmaceutical companies. fortunately there is not enough support for a windfall profits tax, but that can change if the elections in november go the wrong way.
ford was fortunate that they hired allan mullaly to run the company when they did. mullaly saw the direction the economy was heading back when he was hired, and he went out and leveraged all of fords trademarks to get enough cash to weather the coming hard times. this was back in 2005 as i recall. he then went through the companies operations and started cutting the fat and waste in the company, and selling off assets that were dragging the company down, like aston martin, jaguar, and land rover, which also boosted the cash on hand levels.
thus when the economy made its hard down turn in 2008 ford was sitting in a very good position to weather the storm, what with enough cash on hand to last though the end of this year if needed, and many new products in the pipeline like the ford fusion, the new taurus, an newly styled focus, and a new fiesta which is coming in the 2011 model year.

NO, as bad as the economy is, The big three are posting big sales...Think about it.. If you were selling 10 cars a month.. then sold 0 cars the next month..Then sold 1 car the next month.. Your sales profit would be 100% over the previous month.. Alot of company's that post loses are projected loses...I.E. We would have made $1 million this year, but only made $500,000.. So our company has lost $500,000 for this year...It's a tax thing...Windfall taxes don't work.. They are just passed on to us the consumers..Ford didn't take part in the bailout , because they didn't need to.. THE only reason they went to congress was to have a cushion..
Ford had projected the failure of GM (now Government Motors) and Chrysler,,They just didn't know of bad it would be.. Alot of people were affected by this turn down of the auto industry.. I was laid offed from Dana over it..It happens..

Probably because they realized that even now, the government gets a higher percentage of oil revenue than the oil companies do. Oil companies keep about 7% of total revenue that they earn by exploring, extracting, refining, and delivering a product to the people - the government gets more than twice as much of the revenue from oil sales for doing nothing. Taxing the oil companies reduced their incentives for performing value based activities like additional exploration, building of refineries, extraction and delivery, which can only hurt supply even more. It would only worsen an already bad situation. Besides, oil companies don't pay taxes, they push them on to the consumer. This policy would RAISE prices, not push them down. Bottom line, windfall profit taxes punish success. It is always a bad policy and is even more so now. The people pushing this legislation clearly have a very limited understanding of the economic impact it would have.

After the recent years of dismal vehicle sales and the welfare bailouts of two of the big three auto makers, any kind of tax over and above the present taxes that Ford already pays would be nothing more than punitive action by the present administration which would reinforce my believe that the ultimate goal of this administration is control and the eventual collapse of private enterprises into government dependent entities.
I am definitely convinced that Ford made the right decision in refusing to take part in letting the government buy into their right to operate their company the way that they feel is best - independently and without direct government intrusions.
Their recent success has confirmed this in my opinion.
