What is a simple to install and use effective security program for my Vista computer? Are the free ones reliable?

Yes, the free ones are just as good as the paid ones. Basically, there are three ways to secure your computer:
1. Paid Internet Security Suite. You may have heard of Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky etc that are really well distributed. Some of these are good, like Kaspersky Internet Security and Eset Smart Security because they are easy to use and have great detection rates. Stay away from Norton and McAfee - they'll only cause trouble because they are resource-hoggers, considerably slowing down your system, are notoriously hard to install/uninstall and above all are expensive. That accounts for all products in this section though, which is why many people go free. If you just want one program to give you everything and you can afford it, go for Kaspersky.
2. Free. Microsoft Security Essentials is a relatively new free product and I can't praise it enough because it is really easy to use, and the quick scan time takes less than two minutes. It scans for all types of malware and has got great reviews with excellent detection rates. It doesn't have all the features Kaspersky and the others have, but you could get all the extra things free and lots of them you won't really need or you already have. A free Internet Security Suite is Comodo. It has all the features of Kaspersky with an award-winning firewall, but the virus detection rates aren't too great.
3. There is another way to secure your computer - making up your own Internet Security Suite with two or three free programs. For this, you will need as a basis:
1) Anti-virus protection - you can get this from programs like AVG, avast! (I recommend this), Avira, BitDefender etc all free.
2) Spyware and other malware protection - you can get this from Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (I recommend this), SUPERAntiSpyware, Spybot S&D and Lavasoft Ad-Aware AntiMalware etc all free. A list of the most popular is here: http://askbobrankin.com/free_antispyware_programs....
3) A firewall - most routers have them built in now - check the website. If not, there are loads of software firewalls like Windows Firewall or Comodo Firewall. You may already have Windows Firewall.
I recommend you try Microsoft Security Essentials and make sure you have a firewall. If you can afford it, go for Kaspersky or Eset instead.
Hope this helps.
