Anyone watching Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution?

What do you think of the show? Tonight's episode got me a little teary-eyed.

    He is being too polite.

The USDA recommendations that the school dietitian is using as a hammer are based on marketing considerations, not nutritional.

Remember when Reagan said "Ketchup is a vegetable"?

Using questionable guidelines as a weapon to prevent change for the better makes me suspect that somebody is making a profit off of the status quo. Or, perhaps it is just old fashioned incompetence.

When I was in school. a long time ago, I couldn't afford to eat school meals, they were never free and so if I had a lunch, I had brought it with me. I remember that in high school the kids who bought lunches went on strike because the food was so bad. One of them showed me a hamburger he had bought, there were whole red beans in the patty. Seems the cooks were stealing meat and stretching what little they used with the scrapings off of returned plates etc. Of course the school denied all this, but did improve things after their lunch program quit turning a profit.

The nutritional habits of the U.S. need to change, no question about that. But the obstructionist attitude of ignorant slobs can work wonders to prevent progress.

I can see why you were brought to tears when an adult of supposedly average intelligence demands adherence to recommendations that allow greasy french fries to trump rice with fresh veggies on the basis of "good nutrition".

Yeah, that poor girl had me tearing up, too. Imagine being in high school and being told you only had seven years to live. I hope she is able to turn her diet around and get the help she needs to start eating right and exercising.

The french fry incident at the high school was pretty horrifying. Like Jamie said, really good French fries are one of life's great guilty pleasures, but like any other guilty pleasure, you don't eat them EVERY DAY. And the fact that they're considered a "vegetable" makes it even worse. Technically, sure, but potatoes don't have that much nutritional value to begin with, and deep-frying them removes any benefits you might ever have got from them.

    We're watching it.

    I think it's interesting.

I couldn't honestly believe how little these people did know about fruit and veggies or proper diet, and found that both astonishing and sad.

I can't believe how bad the government guidelines are, but I also think they're not understanding them correctly because this isn't what's happening in all schools.

I wish him good luck and hope he's able to help these people...I think those that are fighting him are beyond foolish...it's one thing not to want to change yourself, quite another to think others shouldn't be able to just because you don't want to (like the radio host and the negative lunch lady).

To see such a young girl tonight tell us she's only been given 7 years to live because of spots on her liver was really sad...it's the liver...that's been working overtime to process all the toxins in that crap they feed them routinely -- reminds me of "Super Size Me", the stuff really is poison...I hope they're able to turn things around for her too.
