What causes high cholesterol and how can you lower it?
I got my blood test results in the mail a few days ago and my cholesterol level is in the very high range so I'm curious about what causes it and how I can lower it.
I'm a vegetarian and exercise every day. I am not overweight and do not eat fast food.

Genetics and diet are the two most prevalent reasons one would suffer from high cholesterol. The liver manufacturers cholesterol, so it is important to eat a diet that contains food low in saturated fats. If you have strong genetic marker it will prove more difficult to lower your cholesterol. Did you fast for this test? I would repeat the test, as it could have been a lab error. Continue eating a diet that is low in saturated fats along with an exercise regimen every day, then have the test repeated in 6 months to a year.

Well- it depends on the levels of total cholesterol and ''bad''- I mean aterogenic cholesterol- which is called LDL-cholesterol... Controlled diet+ physical exercise- especially jogging, swimming, running are good ways to lower elevated blood cholesterol...anyway- at times- pills- I mean statins- which are prescription drugs- may be needed-according to your age, general state of health, additional diseases, additional prescription drugs etc.The abovementioned nonpharmacological- i.e. non- drugs ways to lower high cholesterol may bring about weight loss-too- if needed...overall- it's a good topic to thoroughly be dealt with by your Family Doctor- in real life... I am a Family Doctor- yet living far away... in Israel...good health...

high cholesterol is caused by a high animal fat diet. as you might know animal products contain saturated fat. these fats are "saturated", or filled, with cholesterol. you can lower it by lowering the consumption of animal products, and start eating plant products that contain polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. some good plant products are soy milk, which could substitute normal milk, if not you can try milk with a lower fat content. cheerios are said to lower cholesterol, according to their commercials of course. exercise also helps lower cholestorol.
now let me also tell you the reasons why you NEED to lower your cholesterol.
heart disease is the biggest worry if you do not get it down. cholesterol clogs your arteries, and it can lead to a heart attack. so i recommend you try your best to lower your cholesterol.

Since youre a woman you can cut out meat. Eat vegitables, take walks, cut carbs. This is what my mother did and her count went way down. she is healthy again.
