Mario Kart Wii Online?

While I do have a ball playing Coin Battles and Balloon Fights, how is it that some people can catch the items I throw at them from behinds, like Red Shells?

Update:

I notice it's usually people located in Asia.

Update 2:

I knew I was forgetting something -facepalm- Thank you both.

    They aren't catching your items.

Whenever you get a red/green shell, or banana, you can hold down the fire button (instead of just pressing it once) to drag the item behind you. That way, it will act as a shield if you get a hit from behind, but will still allow you to throw the item if you need to use it offensively.

That's what you're seeing - other racers dragging their own items.

You hold a red shell, green shell, banana peel, or bomb behind you by holding the side button on the D-Pad for the wii wheel, and holding R for the Gamecube controller. If a shell hits it, you will not be hit.
