Are Barclays playing a sick joke? or is it plain admin incompetence?

My uncle passed away last August, he drowned and had a heart attack whilst on a day out in a seaside town - so as you can imagine the whole thing was hellish with regards to funeral arrangements etc.

Anyway, he was renting a flat in London and had an account with Barclay's Bank. He was £6 overdrawn at the time he passed away. I wanted all of his post redirected to my address as I did not want the new tenants to be able to open his post - so I stupidly gave my address to Barclays after informing them of the death (and sending a death certificate) just in case of any further correspondance.

Now nearly 9 months on, I am still receiving bank statements and bank cards for my uncle. It has his name as 'Mr John Cahill Deceased'. It was quite distressing to receive this at first months ago, but I put it down to an error. Now I keep receiving them even though I have called them asking them to stop.

My uncle had a death insurance policy and when I phoned them last month to inform them of the death, they told me that someone at Barclays had phoned them and told them that he was dead and also when asked whether he has any relatives, they said no! Even though they knew that he did as they had heard from me on a few occassions. I was shocked at how quick they had been in contacting the insurance company, as I didn't even know about the insurance and yet they somehow knew.

I find it a bit sick, how 'Deceased' is printed on everything as if that's my uncle's name - it's like a sick joke. I thought it was an error but it's beyond that now.

Has anyone else experienced this? I am thinking of complaining to the Financial Ombudsman about the constant correspondance, as it's quite upsetting.

Update:

Thank you to both of you for your helpful answers. Age of reason, your answer is uninformed clearly. You obviously have never had to arrange a funeral, journey to an inquest and identifying a body etc. at the age of 20 in the space of two weeks!!

My mum is a legal adviser, so I know the law. Debts of the deceased are not passed on to members of the family - although banks etc. try to put the pressure on. Apparantly......you do not know what you are doing or saying! lol. Oh yeah, you spelt 'apparantly' wrong too

Age of Reason....have you never lost someone before? Besides, the debt wasn't hers to pay. You are not required to pay your relatives' debts small or big.

Age of Reason, I cannot believe how insensitive you have been. It's good that you can hide behind your anonymous name isn't it?

Yes, having a correct status on the account is normal. If the account has reached a zero balance for approximately three months, the statements will stop. They do the name title change in part to protect your uncles account. It states that he is not there to do business.... right!!! So anyone attempting to transact business should be closely identified and monitored. Cuts down on fraud loss potential!

    Don't take it personal.

Legal. That is the legal name of the bank account. You should have paid the overdraft and had the account closed. Apparently you do not know what you are doing
