Can bathroom tile be painted? What are my color change options?

My bathroom has Pepto-Bismol pink ceramic tile (ahhhhh!) for flooring and for the shower wall. There are many DIY sires with advice on how to sand, primer, and paint as a cost effective way to change the color.

Has anyone done this in the bathroom successfully?

I'm open to other cost effective methods- is it possible to just remove the tile off the shower wall altogether and re-wall? Are peel and stick tiles a good option, or do they look cheap?

As many details, ideas, and options as possible! I am not planning on spending a lot or going over the top as I am renting. Just a way to get rid of the Barbie dream house colored bathroom! =)

There is special paint for tiles in about any color you choose but if you plan in painting a large portion it'll probably not look very good. Also it tends to be ruined after a year or so if it takes too much water flow (like in the shower).

It is possible to replace the tiles though it is much more expensive and it needs to be done by a professional, it'll make your bathroom a mess while it's being replaced.

So painting it is cheaper but might not look the way you wish to. Replacing is possible and it will look great but not cheap at all.

Well it isn't advised to paint tiles, as it wont be waterproof, and painting for floor....no.

For the floor, peel and stick tiles are fast, effective and look nice.

But for thew shower, you will need to remove the old tiles. You'll need to find a service that will remove them, it isn't expensive to get your bathroom retiled at all. My friend done it and she told us we should get new tiles (we have a pale blue, and we did one white), because it was cheap and it only took them a few hours to do.

But we didn't get it done, we just replainted the wall that wasn't covered in tiles as we thought we could brighten it up.

Its really good if you know someone with a mate or something that can do it for you, this is how we've had many floors layed and new baths and doors fitted, as we have quite a few friends of friends to do this.

If not, search the internet for careers in your area that can get rid of the tiles for you and relay.

If you mean peel and stick tiles on your wall, they wouldn't look cheap but I wouldn't think after steam from the shower they'd stay on the wall as the heat may melt the glue that keeps them in place on the wall.

    I hope I helped.

Brigitte, yes u can paint ur tile, u can buy ur self some Muratec acid and go over the wall tile. ( Make sur u dilute the acid with water ) it is real strong and u have to wear gloves, it will harm ur skin if it gets on u. Then u can prime and paint it. The floor tile I don't recommend to paint, because of traffic issues. But u could paint it and waite 24 house after painting and go over the paint with a polyurethane, the same thing thy use for hard wood flooring, it will help it to wear longer. But to keep the price down, u can tile over the existing tile on the floor with an additive u put into ur thin set. ( Laticreet ), It will help the two to bond with each other. I do recommend u talk to ur land lord first, before u start. I hoped I helped. Best of luck.

If you are renting you had better check with the landlord before you do anything to that bathroom. You could find yourself looking a paying for a tile job (very expensive) if you don't. Assuming that the landlord doesn't care then the best way to change the color would be to paint with and epoxy paint. Stick on tiles are a total waste of money.

Are you sure the tiles are ceramic normally they are Porcelain? But anyway I would never paint over any tile, I don't believe it will adhere to the tile in the long term. Don't use peel and stick either not a good moisture barrier. Really you should have those ugly pink tiles removed and re-tile it with the color and design of your choice.

You can always go with white--that will brighten things up considerably. I think also, that a soft peach would look nice. Or a light blue. I think anything that you pick that isn't in a dark tone will look just fine. Get those little color rectangles and bring them into the bathroom and try to imagine what color would work and that you could live with. Again, there's nothing wrong with white. It's a nice blank canvas that you can hang pictures on, or do a decorative border with.
