Which Media Player for my TV?

I would like to buy a media player that I can put all my AVI files on and be able to play them straight through my LCD TV, I know there are several on the market including an Emprex Media player which is a really good price, but am not sure if I can just plug it in to my tv. I have just had a bad experience with a sumovision player that would not give me any sound for my movies and spent lots of time messing around with and getting really frustrated and ended up sending it back , has anyone got any advice as I am not that tech savvy , Thanks in advance for any answers.
