does a variable cylinder engine exist?

Is it possible for a car to have 2 engines one running and the other on standby and engages on the same crank shaft when more power is required only. Say for example if I have a BMW 320i car with L4 engine, and I added another L4 engine next to that only operates at the driver's order, by engaging to a common crank shaft; is this situation possible?

yes for example multi engine vehicles in tractor pulls can have two engines on the same crankshaft, and there are some engineering feats of marvel with five monster supercharged engines, the technology is available, have no idea how to find it though tractor and truck pulls are much bigger in the eastern US good luck

I remember being told of an alfa romeo GTV that had an engine front and back. they both ran together. The gtv has the gearbox over the back axle - maybe this made it a better car to convert. lots of torque!
