How do synthetic hormones work?

I know that if a man takes them, it helps them grow breasts and get softer skin, but what would happen if a woman were to take them. Would they start growing facial hair or is there another pill that women take to become men (in a way).

    It depends on the hormone.

If a woman has too much estrogen, her body will compensate by increasing testosterone production, and she will grow facial hair. Some women on hormone therapy will end up getting a deeper voice or growing more hair.

Male and female are very simple terms that don't really work in defining the spectrum of what it is to be a human being.

Your body tries to keep things balanced so when you give it a little extra hormone, it has to compensate and it can throw your body out of whack, or into whack depending on your outlook.
