What happened to Final Fantasy games?

Every now and then I look on the internet to see if I can find people talking about the same things I think about with FF games.

Final fantasy is one of the best narrative games ever made. That’s 1 - 10 I’m talking about. After 10 the new people working at the company just ruined it all.

To me, compared with 1 - 10, the new FFs just seems very unoriginal and pretty lame at times. The new battle systems a joke, and not being able to roam in an airship, wtf? I really don’t understand why they took all the things that made it FF away and turned it into another platform game, for the sake of innovation?

What I want to know is after 9 or 10 when the game elements started to make a drastic change, were most of Square Enix FF dev’s completely new at the company? What other factors shifted the change of the game?

And does anyone agree with me that FF just seems, although bright, colourful and looks amazing, very unimaginative and unoriginal?

Sorry, more of a rant than a question. Thanks :D

Update:

Oh I agree that from 1 – 10 there has been changes in narrative, character development, battle system (not a complete overhaul though) etc. But the core of FF games stayed true. Only now it has gone through drastic changes that I think have made it like all the other console RPG games out there, which are usually pretty crap and boring. To me it seems like the new dev’s have forgotten the roots of the game and are trying to milk the ideas of the old dev’s man to make as much money as they can. A wider audience means more sales. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, and it was never broken.

Update 2:

Even though everyone’s answers are based on their own opinions I really think FF has gone down a bad route.

The battle system is just awful. Yeah change the system to keep it different form the last, but still keep the fundamental turn based (or however you call it) alive. Now I hear it’s nearly all controlled for you. What’s the f***ing point? I liked having to make tactical decisions.

And all the other features they took out like flying a ship around, world map, non follwong cameras and the static environments. Now everything looks so square.

Update 3:

**Continued**

All in all, in my opinion, FF wasn’t getting old it was still fun seeing that it was a completely different story (although the good vs. bad / light vs. dark motif is always still there). The graphics made no difference, I love the old crappy graphics and the 7-9 improved graphics. It still sucked me into the world and made me care about the characters, however dorky that sounds. To me FF has gone from the equivalent of an Independent film to Hollywood mainstream BS. It’s ALL about making money now and not for the love of the game.

But I accept that and move on. It’s just a shame.

The last guy's answer is BS. There has been no trend like that until after FF10. Most people love or enjoy the final fantasies up to that point. 11 went in the crapper because it's an mmo rpg. 12 was okay, I was able to enjoy it, but it was awful if put on the same scale as it's predecessors. I didn't really care for the characters, and the music was absolute garbage. The gameplay saved it though. As far as 13, I like it so far. I haven't played very much yet, but I know a lot of people hate it with a passion for many reasons.

I think the series has changed. It changed graphically at 7, and it changed 10 as well in a few ways. It's been changing since the first one. I've played almost every final fantasy, and I can see it change all the way through. It's just what happens to everything. There have a been a lot of bad changes lately. All you can do is hope the next change will be a good one.

The pinnacle of the FF series is FF 6. If you say 7 is better than 6 than either you haven't played it or you were mesmerized by the "pretty graphics" and have thus kept that theory... or you just say it is the best cause every other graphic fanboy said so.

How is 13 unoriginal? Sure the theme of good vs evil is the same as the previous ones, and that's the core of the FF series, but almost everything is different. The battle system is different. The weapons upgrading system is different. The storyline is different. The characters are different (with exception of the inclusion of the name Cid and chocobos). The only thing that is similar is the leveling system, which was modeled after FF X. Before you start talking about Lightning and Cloud, the only similarity between the two is that they are both ex-soldiers. Lightning is the exact opposite of Cloud to the point that it isn't funny.

Then we get to your comment of the game being unimaginative. How can you even say that when Square has released 13 Final Fantasy games that have nothing to do with each other. There is so much mystery in the game that it isn't funny. When you're playing through the game, since it is a game, you believe that you are going to find your purpose and to what end? Become a crystal? How exciting of an ending is that? So then you get to thinking... how am I going to beat the system of fal'ci's ultimatum of all l'cies become either a cie'th or a crystal.

I agree with the proposed idea that people always complain about the current FF game and act all nostalgic until the next FF game comes out. Then the one that was complained about becomes alright while the other ones are so much better. The vicious cycle continues until Square stops releasing FF games. Don't worry, I'm sure when FF XV comes out, people will be saying that FF XIII was such a good game and they begin to wonder why FF XV is so horrible compared to the previous ones. I remember when people were complaining about FF XII; they said it was such a horrible game. Now people are saying that it was an alright game. Mark my words... FF XIII will become a liked game when the next FF game comes out.

If you want to play a series that never did, and never will change then play Dragon Warrior. You're lying to yourself if you think Final Fantasy hasn't changed in significantly measurable ways from 1-10. The trend with FF douche-baggery is to hate the current one and wax poetic about the "good ol' days" of Final Fantasy until a new one comes out.

I think the last few games have matured immensely in good ways. The typical person that grew up with Final Fantasy is coming up on 30 years old so it only makes sense that the games should progress with the fanbase. Delivering 20 year old gameplay simply isn't going to work for a group of people who's tastes have evolved.
