Can Emulators interact in any way with external devices or separate files?

I wasn't quite sure how to phrase my question so I'll elaborate here.

Can Emulators interact with other emulators or save data or for example: trade pokemon from one game to another? Also I realize that some Emulators will function differently than others, if you have any particular knowledge of this that would affect the answer, please include that information.

Thanks.

I'm not sure if they could trade pokemon and I don't think they can trade save data but emulators can interact with other emulators over the kaillera servers. If you download project 64k (n64 online emulator) you can get online through the kaillera server and join other servers and face people in games. In order to face someone you must have the same emulator, game version (american, european or japanese rom) and connection (you can change the connection from bad, good or excellent anytime you want). The only emulators I've used online are nintendo 64's mupen 64k and project 64k (more people use this one) but there are other online emulators for other systems. That's the only way that I can think of where emulators can interact with each other.
