Ubuntu 9.10 Linux Screen size?

I need some help with my Linux Ubuntu 9.10, I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop (old) and when i loaded the Ubuntu onto my laptop it works but there is a 1in black border around it and i want to increase the window but it won't let me go any larger! how can i make it bigger? simply.

    It sounds, sir, like you need to install the Linux drivers for your video card. You may be able to find them at Toshiba's website, but I wouldn't be surprised if you have to trawl the net to find it.

    System>Preferences>Display. Increase resolution to highest. Also go to System>Administration>drivers to make sure Gfx drivers are up to date and if you have Nvidia that you are using their drivers
