How do I update microsoft word?

I have a Windows XP and have a really old microsoft word from like 98. How can I update microsoft to a newer version.

    That's known as "upgrading" not "updating" and it costs money. Unfortunately, unless your version of Word is Word 2000, it's too old to qualify for the lower upgrade price to Word 2007.

    As far as upgrading to a more recent version of Windows, I would not recommend it. Windows XP-era hardware is generally too lightweight (RAM, CPU, hard disk space, possibly even the BIOS chip) to handle Windows 7 and probably can't be beefed up enough to support it.

    I seriously think your best bet would be a new machine with the software. (Don't be misled by the free trial copy of Microsoft Office you're likely to get with just about any machine these days. It is NOT a free, licensed copy. It's good for only 25 uses or 60 days, then it lets you read and print your documents, but nothing else.)
