How much baby food should my baby be eating every day?
Hi there. My son is almost 5 months old. I just tried giving him baby food last week to test out how he would do and he did great! He loves it! He was showing all the signs that he was ready. He opens his mouth and swallows almost all of it every spoon full. I was shocked because my 1st son was always a handful at feedings. Anyway, I have been introducing one new thing every couple days and so far he has had apples, bananas, sweet potatoes & carrots. I have been feeding him about twice a day and he will usually eat 2-3 ounces each feeding. How much should he be eating a day/each feeding now that I want (and he wants) to be eating baby food every day? I have also started making my own baby food. So far it's gone well. Anyone have any other good recipes for stage one? I'm going to try apples next. I don't have a steamer so I was going to boil them??? All input is appreciated. :-)
I breast feed and offer him baby food about an hour after. Definately not after every feeding. I have been doing it twice a day. Another reason I started him on baby food was because I have been having to give him a bottle of formula every day because he has been drinking more than I produce. Also, I work full time so I cannot exclusively BFeed. I pump several times a day so based on that he gets about 25-30 ounces of breast milk a day. Is it better to just give him formula or a little baby food every day?

well wyatt i bought the 2nd jars cas its cheeper and now he goes though 1 and a half jar a day. than gets a sippy cup of apple juice and breastmilk before and after every feeding some times he acts hungery still and i will give him the rest of jar to.. try squash wyatt loves it. lol my friend hand me boil sqash with sweet peas and he thought it was heaven but dont rush diffent foods cas he could be allgic like wyatt cant eat peaches cas he breaks out really bad. and dont change apple juices if you give him this because wyatt cant have no other brand than juicey juicey. hope this help you will notice that he is not trying to open his mouth or turns his hed when he is full just pay attention to him and the way he acts your mothery nature will pop in just trust your self.

He really should be eating none at all. 6 months is the recommended time to begin. (The fact that he 'loves it' doesn't mean it's good for him.
If he enjoys it and you are set on continuing, a couple of tablespoons or so, once a day, is more than ample.
Are you offering the solids after his bottle or breastfeed? If not, you should be doing so. If you ARE giving his bottle/breast first and he still wants 2-3 ounces, I'd probably be offering a little more formula or encouraging him to nurse longer.

One feeding/day is enough at this age. Solids are just for practice and shouldn't be used as a source of nutrition until your baby is much older. You want to avoid giving him too much(i.e. at every feeding) because you run the risk of his formula/breast milk intake decreasing and, in turn, causing him to lack what he really needs at this age.
