Are skittles and dark chocolate safe for the GFCF diet?

I'm trying to put my son on the GFCF diet to see if it will help him with some GI problems and help him with his autism. I need some fun foods from time to time and was wondering if Dark Chocolate and Skittles are safe on a GFCF diet?

You are going to have to get used to reading the list of ingredients for *everything*, even things you've given him before, as they change. One brand of dark chocolate may have gluten or casein, while another may not. Your best bet is to look for alternatives in the gluten-free section of a grocery store, and look for things also marked "dairy-free" or "casein-free". These things are usually made in dedicated facilities so you don't have to worry about cross-contamination.

The amount of artificial coloring and sugar in Skittles, whether or not they are GFCF (not sure), might make them unsuitable for him anyway. You don't need to be psychotic about these things, but it does help to limit them. Gummy bears are usually O.K., too, but if you have trouble letting him brush your teeth, sticky candies are probably good to avoid.

My son loves these Meringue things I get at Trader Joe's. I think they are manufactured by a company called Miss Meringue. I give them to him only when he "works" for them, such as using a bit of sign language or mimicking a sound, or picking something up that he dropped and throwing it away, etc. They have been wonderful motivators for him. I strongly recommend that you use candy as rewards instead of just for something yummy to eat, because it really gives good results.

You should be able to find chocolate that is specifically GFCF, too.

My son has been GFCF for about 8 months and he's shown a lot of improvement. I think the casein has been a bigger part of it than the gluten in his case, but every child is different. He has been throwing far, far fewer and less severe temper tantrums and is beginning to mimic and speak a bit. It is very obvious when he's eaten something with gluten and casein because he acts more "autistic"... I know that sounds stupid to say, but you will see what I mean.

It took us months of the gluten-free diet (we started that part first) before we saw some improvement, but the first day he was casein-free, he spent the entire day sitting on the couch, hanging out, quiet. It was... unbelievable. So... Good luck, and give it a good shot!

Also, there are lists available online that can help you when you go grocery shopping, by the way. A lot of brands are also starting to list their gluten-free items on their websites, but again, you may have to worry about cross-contamination.

Skittles are GFCF, but most chocolate have one or the other in it. My daughter is GFCF and Soy Free (the protein in soy is very similar to gluten and casein so children who are Gluten/casein intolerant often have problems with soy too). The only chocolate I have found that she can eat is Enjoy Life brand.

Here are a couple good websites with lists of GFCF foods
