Any tips for keeping crickets? Four questions about crickets....and one random one. :D?

Hey. :) I have a few questions about keeping crickets. You don't have to answer all of these. Any advice at all is appreciated. Thanks!

1. Can I keep my cricket container in a cabinet? I'm worried about air circulation though...I've read about people using aquarium air pumps to circulate air in cabinets...how would that work exactly? And would soundproofing foam on the walls help muffle the noise?

2. How important is light? I've done a lot of reading and have read everything from "too little light will reduce the lifespan" to "crickets should be kept in a dark area." What's your opinion?

3. How can I keep noise at a minimum? It's bugging the crap out of my sister (no pun intended). Would putting soundproofing foam on the outside of the four sides and the bottom of the container help at all? Obviously the top needs left alone for air circulation.

4. What's the best way to clean out the container without letting crickets escape? I have one of those "cricket keepers" with the tubes, if you know what I'm talking about. I was thinking of getting a second container, then transfering the lid with the tubes from one container to the other, and dumping any stragglers and egg crate in after. Obviously some will inevitably escape, but I do all my cricket work with the container sitting in my bearded dragon's tank. Escapees last about 10 seconds thanks to my dear Loki.

5. Anything interesting and irrelevent you want to share? :)

    1. Probably, depending on the cabinet. Try it out for a week or so and see how it goes. As long as the container is well ventilated, you shouldn't need an air-pump.

    2. There's no real evidence backing either claim, just observations of people that may or may not have to do with the lighting. Personally, I don't think it matters much.

    3. I personally love the noise--that's probably the only thing I actually like about crickets. The foam is a good idea. I've never tried it, but it definitely might help.

    4. I don't think there's any great way to get the job done, they're so fast, but the best strategy I've come up with is to have two identical containers, one with crickets, one empty. Put both in the bathtub (so escapees can be more easily caught) and move the crickets into the other container. Rotate every time the cage needs cleaning.

    5. How old is your Loki? :) I'm also a beardie-person, they are the sweetest little guys! I used to buy crickets for my Budo, but not for very long. I really really really hate crickets. They smell, they escape, they're loud, and then they die for no apparent reason, and THEN they smell even worse. If there is ever a point where you can no longer put up with the crickets, I HIGHLY recommend dubia cockroaches. Kind of expensive, but they will breed in pretty much any conditions and it's really easy to maintain a colony. The adults are fairly large. If Loki is a young beardie, you can feed baby roaches. At any given time, I've got every size from pinhead to 2" roaches in my colony. They're highly nutritious, silent, odorless, only need their cage cleaned every 6 months or so, and rarely die (which could be a very bad thing if they get out in your house, but that's unlikely as they can't climb, fly, or jump). Anyways, just an idea to put out there. :)

If your beardie is ok with it, you could switch to locusts or roaches instead.

Niether make a noise or smell like crickets - they fill beardies up more and are easier to grab a hold of than crickets than run and ping everywhere!

    anyways

    1) you can, as long as you open the capinet reuglarly for air circulation. Many pet shops keep their feeders in cupboards and cabinets with no issues; and yes, soundproof foam would help a little :)

    2) i've not got a clue on that one... sorry. My bugs live in the lizard room just sat on the side with natural daylight coming through the window and of course the light from the lizard tanks. Hmm...

    3) Switch to different bugs haha. Crickets are noisey, end of. You can buy silent crickets though, but they still stink

    4) Seems like you and Loki have the best idea there - whatever you do, if you are moving things around in the cricket tub then some are bound to escape; there really isnt any way around it!

I think the crickets are the easiest out of all of my critters to take care of! A 10 gallon with some sort of absorbetent substrate to soak up their pee, cardboard stuff too, I use to-go lids for their food and that water stuff they eat...i use a 25 watt bulb THEY LOVE IT and if ur lucky and get the right temp they get horny also, and laqst but not least tell ur sis EARPLUGS i get a big jar of like 200 of em for ten bucks at walmart. I hope this helps, maybe i can send you a pic of my setup if you want
