Help, my dog is eating wild animal/ feral cat poop - can I cure this?

My 7 year old Golden Retriever (who is a rescue I've had for about 3 months) has taken quite a liking to the wild animal (possibly feral cat) poop that is in the yard and surrounding fields. I'm not sure what animal the feces is from, but it's not a dog or likely even a domesticated animal. We have feral cats, deer, raccoons, possums, rabbits, etc in our yard and in surrounding woods and areas around the home (hard to believe I live within the city limits of a place a quarter million in population). But its a wooded area with lots of interesting widlife - but I'm mostly sure the poop he's eating is from the feral cats.

When I'm with him I make him stop eating the poop and I guide him away from the area, but since he's sometimes in the yard off leash and I dont' always know what he's sniffing around for it's hard to stop him. Is there anything I can do besides what I'm already doing? BTW, he is fed an appropriate amount of senior Nutro Max twice daily - he isn't hungry and he isn't being fed poor quality food. Thanks.

Actually, Nutro Max is fairly low quality food. Corn Gluten, poultry fat, lots of wheat - all are poor ingredients.

He needs to be taught a 'leave it' command and can only be outside if he's being supervised. If your yard is fenced, then the yard needs to be cleaned before he's allowed outside unsupervised.

Some dogs just like to eat poop. It often has NOTHING to do with lacking nutrients. My dog loved my cat's poop, and she's fed nothing but ultra high quality foods. She just liked whatever the cat was fed and digested, too.

    hey there,

i know just where your coming from. eating animal poop is usually just out of habit for dogs, and isn't always linked with dietary needs. it is extremely hard to break the habit of eating animal poops, as i am experienceing with blaze. unfortunatley, i cannot give you a straight answer but i want you to be aware of the dangers.

in my area, we are experienceing a pandemic of Giardia amongst our animals. It is stemming from rabbits and coyotes, and is spread through the ingestion and contact of feces. Blaze (my boston) picked up giardia a month ago, and required 2 stool samples, a blood test, and a months worth of medicine to eradicate it ($30+ 100+ 300+ 300=730$ in treatment, *just medicine, not including the vet fees*). Giardia never fully goes away, and the symptoms are hard to catch. In fact, it doesnt affect all dogs, and so it has really become a pandemic in our neighbourhood as lots of dogs are carrying it without realization. In our case, he would go through brutal 2-week cycles of severe diaherra and vommiting, and then back to normal.

all i ask is that you be very careful, and despite what most people say there are serious diseases, parasites and condiitons these animals carry. I would hate to see others experince the same thing.

I have the same problem with my dog, and I have yet to find a solution other than closing the door to where the litter box is at while my dog is in the house. As for the why, I have read that it could be because cat poop tastes like food to them, the cat poop probably tastes alot like the cat food they eat, and I know my dog prefers cat food over her own food. I have heard a few other reasons as to the why, but the taste parts seems to make the most sense to me.

It's a good idea to try to pick up the poop in your yard if you can. It's quite possible that your dog could get worms from eating poop. Most dogs will do this if their body is lacking a certain nutrient, something he's not getting from his diet. He may need a supplement of some kind - next time you're at the vet, mention it to the doctor and he may have some good ideas. Good luck, and WELL DONE for adopting a mature dog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pick up the poop in your yard daily. Keep an eye on him when on, or off, leash.

You could get some red flags and teach him "leave it". Leave it with the red flags will mean that anything near the flag is to be avoided...including poop. It works, but it takes some serious consistency and you still have to pick up the poop.

lol - there are ALL kinds of theories about dogs eating poop ranging from nutritional defiency to insecurity to i-dunno-what-all-else.

first off, dogs don't eat poop for nutritional reasons. this is because dogs are not hind-end digesters like rabbits, who must eat their poop the first time around in order to extract all the nutrients.

mother dogs eat the poop of the puppies until they are weaned - this is to protect the pups from scent detection by predators. other dogs of both genders may mimic this behaviour in order to protect, for example, the baby in the house.

however, the main reason dogs eat poop?

    simple.

    they LIKE it.

not their problem us humans have ideas regarding the proper usage of fecal matter.

there is one genuine reason to prevent your dog from even sniffing feces left lying around: canine parvovirus is a fiercely contagious virus that is transmitted through fecal matter. even sniffing the poop can expose your dog to it. it's a horrible, horrible disease that, basically, rots away their intestinal lining and leads to a slow, agonizing, torturous death or a prohibitively expensive vet bill. even so, your dog could have lifelong health consequences.
