Audacity is good but limited in my opinion. Maybe it's just cause I was used to using Adobe Soundbooth among others. most of the ones you have to buy that are good are expensive.

So operating example you could record guitar, bass, drums, and so on. with MIDI, then upload a vocal music and edit/blend the completed element at the same time. classes that try this are Cakewalk, Cubase, even FL Studio.
