Chihuahua breeder...............?
I am looking into getting a Chihuahua, I would love to have a teacup chihuahua because I travel between Texas and New York often and it would be easy to take one on the plane with me. But please dont tell me to go to my local shelter (I would love to adopt one from the shelter) because I have a bird (a cockatoo) and need to train the dog to get along with it at an early age. Anyone know of any reputable breeders in San Antonio or surrounding area? Thanks for your help =)

I don't know of any breeders in the San Antonio or surrounding areas HOWEVER I would recommend that you do some research and try to find some dog shows in your area. Generally if they are competing in the dog show its with their own breed dog OR someone working as a handler for someone who breeds- so you can talk with people and try to find a breeder you like.
(Make not to talk to them right before they are going in the ring- you'll annoy them and they won't be focused on you and probably won't answer your questions as well- they'll be focused on preparing and getting ready to go into the ring.) Chihuahuas are a common breed and I'm sure there are some breeders in your neck of the woods that breed nice chihuahuas- its just a matter of finding them. It will also give you a change to admire some breed-quality chi's! :)
I agree- there are sometimes dogs that come from shelters that come out of the shelter with issues unfortunately (although most are lovely dogs!)-they had to be in some type of bad situation to be in the shelter in the first place- while it would be a lovely thing to adopt a dog from a shelter, if that's not what you want, no one should force you to get a dog you don't feel safe with or that you don't want.
It's YOUR dog- get the dog that YOU want since its most likely going to be in your life for the next ten to fifteen years.
I would recommend AGAINST getting a "teacup" chihuahua- this isn't a term any reputable breeder is going to use. It's a term used generally to refer to the smallest pup in the litter generally referred to by most reputable breeders as the 'runt'. You have to consider that they are the smallest for a reason and it generally isn't good breeding for size- its because there is something wrong with them- the body's energy then is going towards fighting the problem instead of helping them grow and thus- you get a very small dog.
Airlines will totally take a small, normally sized chihuahua- and the dog will still be under ten pounds generally without the risk of health issues like an open fontanel, liver shunts, heart problems, etc that come so frequently with teacups.
I know several people with shetland sheepdogs (a much larger breed,) that can take THEIR dogs on planes- and those are MUCH larger than any chihuahua I have ever met.
I would AVOID any internet sites or breeders that will "ship" the dog to you- any reputable breeder isn't going to ship a dog to you without having you see their breeding facility (a home if its a good breeder! Not a place of business!) and have you meet the mother if not BOTH parents as well as their other dogs. The dogs should be champions to prove they are quality dogs- not just "OMG He's so cute I think he deserves to be a daddy!"

Okay, first off, theres no such thing as a "Teacup" anything. This is a term BYB (Back Yard Breeders) use who breed unreputable and sick dogs. The "teacups" are another term for unhealthy muts.
I also don't believe you should be getting a dog at this point. You should wait until you are more stable (not flying back and forth from Texas and New York) Dogs need to live in a stable, single, environment.
Also, do your own breeder research. I'm sure you can find on by "Google Searching." Ask around. I'm sure you have a friend who knows something about one.
I really would suggest adopting. Don't give me all that "Please dont tell me to go to a shelter" BS. because the dogs in shelters are ALREADY trained to get along with w.e. Just go to the shelter and you will quickly find the right do suitable for you. Remember, everytime you buy a breeder dog, a helpless shelter dog will DIE.

There is no such thing as a teacup chi(unless you talking about something you drink tea out of), they are small enough, if you want a dog under 2lbs get a male rat or a guinea pig.
It's spring time so there will be many many puppies in shelters now, just keep looking and waiting. I'm sure you would need to train the bird to get along with the tiny dog, not the other way around(lol).

There's NO such thing as a "teacup" chihuahua. Chihuahuas come in ONE SIZE ONLY.. and they are already the smallest breed of dog at 6 pds or less. "teacup" is a scam label to sell sickly runts for a high price tag. Reputable breeders DO NOT use the "teacup" label to sell their puppies.
The breed club can refer you to a reputable breeder in your area..

teacup chihuahuas are mutts, so there's not reputable breeder!!! Buy a normal healthy sized chihuahua from a reputable breeder. Any teacup size dog will have lots of health issues so you'll waste thousands going to the vet, most dogs will die young.

you CAN find puppies in shelters you know. often they have a list so put your name down for one.
also do not buy one from a really scummy breeder, a good breeder will not be wanting money, but actually want a good home for there dog.
chihuahuas are actually quite difficult to train ( Especially the girl ones) so moving about alot won't be good for a small puppy, as its surroundings are going to differ all the time. so you would actually be better off buying an older one.
also chihuahuas are not fashion accessories so please think it through before buying and make sure you can afford vet bills you would be surprised how easily they hurt themselves ....

Hello there. There is NO such animal as a tea cup Chihuahua and I would steer clear of any so called breeder who says there is. Get a real Chi. They are healthy and happy.
