Tattoo swelling a year after getting...?

Hullo answerers.

so, last night I'm trying to think of ways I can speed up getting over this blasted cold and a quick glance to the tattoo on my arm reveals that the thing has started to swell!

I applied some ice to reduce it until the morning and today it's fine. you would never know it had swollen.

My question is does anyone else with tattoos find that their tattoos occasionally swell? I understand this might be an infection (and given I've got a cold at the moment, perhaps this swelling was brought on due to my immune system being preoccupied.) but the fact that my tattoo is no longer swollen places doubts in my head.

sprinkle me with your wisdom. (and, yes, i am going to a doctor. duh!)

my tattoo sometimes swells, its not a lot just so you can feel the pattern when you move your finger over it. it always goes the next day or two.

if she's allergic to anything it'll be the ink, it's the only thing that stays in the body. the worst case scenario with an allergy to ink if that they use a more concentrated/better ink on her next tattoo and she'll have a worse reaction. a doctor would probably be able to test for allergies by putting ink on her skin (not a tattoo, just rub the ink on) and see if there is a reaction. a tattooist will probably be able to do this, or may even have a different method. I'd go and check with a professional before she gets another tattoo! good luck!

its probably because you have the cold, while you're immune system works to fight off the cold, they leave the ink unattended. My artist told me that tats do swell from time to time when the immune system stops the ink from seeping into the bloodstream or the skin. I have tats on my wrists so yeah, i've never experienced swollen tats other than right after getting them, but that sounds strange.Well you put ice over it and said it was fine, so maybe its just a kink. But then again, I don't know, I just go by what i'm told.

Yup. Mine raise and get itchy when the barometric pressure drops, and mine's about two years old. You have to understand that the process of tattooing creates scars. If the tattoo is done properly, these scars aren't visible or raised normally, but they can swell and raise on occasion. That's just how tattoos and scars behave.
