Why did my internet all of a sudden slow down?

okay, so yesterday my internet was running as fast as it usually dose, so was my mom's and sister's today my mom tried to get on her computer and shes kept saying it was really really slow so she thought it was her computer then i tried and mine was as slow, if not slower, than hers. same thing with my sister. we tried unplugging the modem (2wire774) is our modem name. and the phone line that went to it. that sped it up for a few minuets. then back to slow.

it started raining about an hour before it started going slow maybe that has has something to do with it.

or a "bad ip"? mine is 165.168.1.6

the signal strength is excellent

we have unlimited broadband

i have virus scanned my computer, deleted my internet temp. files, windows temp files, and defragged my computer.

someone please help me??? thanks.

Who is your ISP? I found it funny that 165.168.0.0/16 is still listed in ARIN as the Bear Stearns network. I know that Bear Stearns can't be your ISP, so it made me a bit curious!

It does sound like it's probably your ISP. I would have suggested you try connecting directly to your modem if you had been using a router, but you already have already done that without success. Since both computers seem to be having the same problem, and you're not using a router, that eliminates the possibility of someone else on the network using a large amount of bandwidth, degrading performance for you and your mother and sister.

The fact that your connection works, but is slower than usual, moreover, means that it's almost certainly not a configuration problem on one of the computers, since user error like that would usually tend to cause you to be unable to connect at all, instead of connecting but slowly.

Check your ISP's website to see if there is a page for up-to-date network issues information, such as outages. If not, you may want to call by telephone and see what they can tell you from their end.

Personally, I have heard of a lot of complaints on this modem type, especially when it rains. I would also suggest calling your ISP or telecom company to have them check the line. I am not sure if you are in the country, but I have known many people that start to get connectivity problem when it rains. There could be a break in the line or potentially in your house.

Also I would turn off all of the machines in your house. Turn only your machine on and perform a speedtest http://www.speedtest.net./ Check what you get. Turn on the next machine, while leaving the other on, and wash, rinse, repeat. Perhaps that can tell you if any particular machine is using more bandwidth than the others.

Finally, I found an article about your modem that has some discussions about some changes you can make that might improve performance. http://text.broadbandreports.com/forum/r20914977-N...

The ISP might be channeling packet flow. Every month a user is allowed X amount of bandwidth, this can be sped up or slowed down at any time.

Could be something at your internet service provider. You should contact them on Monday.

If you are having it with multiple computers, call your internet service provider and see if they are having difficulties.
