I had mcafee but it has expired so I was wondering what one would be best to download and keep my computer safe from viruses and other things.

Update:

By the way if forgot to mention that i have tried to download several ones and my computer wont let me open them because they are binary and say they contain viruses and other infectious items.

You will get a lot of answers suggesting programs. In reality though, the best antimalware program is the one between your ears.

You can get malware by just visiting a site. The very best protection from "driveby" installs of malware is Firefox Browser with the NoScript addon. IE has nothing to compare with that.

NEVER open an email unless you are sure who it is from. Never open an attachment unless you are expecting it. Confirm with sender, otherwise.

Downloading free music, movies, videos, cracked programs, and other pirated files is dangerous. Criminals use those to

hide their malware and infect your computer.

Never click on any ads especially if they are on popular sites. The more popular the site, the more likely the ad will not be what you expect. Many redirect you to malware sites.

Keep all of your programs and Windows updated. Check at least once a month using a program such as Secunia Online Scanner which will tell you if you are missing any updates. VERY important.

Online games are another malware magnet. Security programs cannot protect you from the malware that exists on them.

Never post your email address online. Use a "throwaway" address other than your primary one for registering and don't post it either on forums, etc.

Protect your computer administrator account from other users by a password and set up a guest account for others.

None of the above rules are difficult to follow but will save you a lot of grief in the future.

Just personal opinion of course. I use Avast , I have also got superantispyware and Malwarebytes. I recently changed to Comodo firewall which seems fine and I seem to boot up quicker. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans Hackers etc. I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly.

Blocked access to anti-malware sites or files indicates an infection already.

MalwareBytes is good at getting a good clean system to begin your transformation to a cleaner system.

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/

(free version has no "real-time" shield)

You'll also have to re-name the file (to anything.exe ) in order to run it.

    Go to Start> 'c' drive> programs> malwarebytes folder.

In that folder find the " mbam.exe " file, and rename it.

System restore should also be turned off.

Finding that depends on what OS version you have.

Win7 is: Right click "Computer"> Properties> System> System Protection tab> Configure restore settings...heading "Configure" button> Restore settings @ top> tick "Turn off..." > OK out.

    Other OS's are similar.

    Post-cleaning prevention:

One real and lasting lesson to learn from all this is A) Either stop using Windows on the Internet; or B) Stop using Internet Explorer.

IE is a broken piece of rubbish, which is why you (and millions of others) are victims of these "rogue" malware items.

Because of inherent architecture of Internet browsers (especially IE) vulnerabilities (notably 'javascript') are readily exploited, and it is even more important that you use Firefox with 'NoScript' add-on, which will prevent "Click-jacking', hidden "iFrame" exploits, and "Drive-by" installs.

    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722

Special note: Firefox has been hacked by Microsoftie.

Microsoft has installed into Firefox (unknown and unannounced), rubbish that degrades the security of Firefox to little more than IE, and may under some conditions negate the benefits of "NoScript".

Check your FF 'Add-on's'> "Extensions" & "Plug-in's" tabs and disable "NET framework", "Windows Presentation Foundation", "Shockwave", "Silverlight", JavaScript stuff, or other active scripting rubbish.

AVG is condierd to be the best in market but according to my point of view you can save your computer from external threats with an antivirus but there are many internal threats which we dont know and pop up in the form of erros , the best way to avoid those erros you must have to clean your window registry for this you need to install some registry repairer or cleaner.

In my opinion, Kaspersky is one of the better anti-virus applications.

You can get the free trial version of this security tool at the following link:

    http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

You should also ensure your antispyware application is up to date and fully operational.
