to solve this ratio, 1/2 : 2 = 1/3 : X, do I have to change the fractions to common denominators first?

    No, cross multiply and get

    x/2=2/3

    x=4/3

    1/2 : 2/1 written with a common denominator is...

    1/2 : 4/2

    Then...

    1/3: X written with a common denominator is...

    1/3: 4/3

    No.

    Just cross multiply and make the 2 and the x into 2/1 and x/1 to multiply. Keep simplifying. The answer is 4/3.
