I 'rescued' an injured toad today and I don't know the first thing about taking care of it - advice please?
found an injured toad today, leg broken badly. Vet is amputating half it's back leg tonight so it won't be able to return to wild. (at their cost I shoud add-Kudos) It's young. I will bring it home to find a safe placement like school, library, daycare - something or someone to keep it has a pet. I bought some stuff from petco, half log for hiding, "forest" ground and a water bowl for him to go in. oh and some live crickets. any advice is helpful - i'm a dog and cat person and don't know the first thing about taking care of frogs.

Step 1Prepare tank first. Add your dirt and if you like fish tank rocks. Put your water bowl so that it is even with the dirt. Put a rock in the center to help them get in and out if you like. Add your plants and turn your heat lamp on. Add your log.
Step 2Get your toad. You can go to a pet store or catch them. My husband goes to ponds and lakes and catches them. Anywhere where there is a little water is a good spot. I catch them in the spring as tadpoles and raise them.
Step 3Feed him five bugs a day, depending on size. What we do is dump all the bugs in his tank and let him eats as he pleases. Our toad is a little overweight though! Sometimes you can find a decaying log to put in there tank. These are always full of bugs.
Step 4Clean tank as needed but at least once every 1-4 months depending on how many toads you have. Just remove old dirt and add new. That all it takes.

First of all - well done. It's wonderful to come across people like you who really care for little wild creatures who share this planet with us.

I hope that you either keep him or find a caring home for him . . . poor thing.
