Why do some people compete over who's musical taste is better?

What sounds good to you SHOULD be the only motivating factor for one's music, but image is a huge deal for a lot of people.

Because music is like food. Some people like Chef Boyardee and some people prefer Olive Garden. Some people used to like Chef Boyardee and now they don't like it because they realized Olive Garden was better. Some poeple still like both, and some people are still stuck in Chef Boyardee mode. I like Chef Boyardee but I rarely have it, I prefer Olive Garden. But now I can make my own spaghetti anyway I want because I learned to like all kinds of it.
