Clunking over small bumps, front wheel only?

I get an annoying clunking from the front passenger wheel area when I go over small bumps at low speed (25-40 mph). I've tried jacking-up to see if the wheel is loose, it's not.

(Ford Fiesta 1998)

Any ideas?

    Hi

The most common part on your ford fiesta that will give you a clunking Noise when driving over rough surfaces is the link rods they are connected between the track control arm and the front shock absorbers very easy to replace

i too am leaning towards bad cv. run your hands over the rubber boots and see if any cracks or grease being sprayed all over the place. try this, go to a parking lot and drive in a circle to the left and listen. if cv is bad on left side it will clunk while turning left. then do the same going right. etc. if this doesnt work, take it to repair shop and take them for a ride over small bumps and dips and see what they say. i dont know what u could grease up to make a clunk go away. good luck, rob

Suspension balljoints, or strut mountings worn out.

Jack up the car and shake the wheel, and watch the suspension mounting in the engine compartment. If it moves more than a couple of millimetres, you may have found the problem.

Otherwise look at the lower suspension arms.

Ball joint worn, rubber bushes in the lower wishbone, rubber bushes in the suspension strut, any of these can be worn, but it takes an expert garage to identify the problem, you can't do it yourself. Ask a garage to check it out.

Could be ball joint, could be wishbone bushes but 9/10 times it is the link rod that causes knocking when it has slight play in it.

They are easy to change and don't cost much.

    It looks similar to this . . . .

Could be your drive axle or a front end part. Take to garage that does free inspection of front end and get a few prices before you let someone fix it ,or diy.

    Check your wheel bearings.

your ball joint is about break and your front wheel will fold under the car while you are driving.

hope it doesnt happen while your going 60 mph on the freeway.
