What are some Grateful Dead songs I should listen to?

I've always hated the Grateful Dead with a fiery, burning passion, and I've decided that now would be an appropriate time to put out that fire.

So... what are some Grateful Dead songs I should listen to? Please, no albums - just songs, nothing too psychedelic, I don't know if I can handle that yet. Just the basics... thanks. :)

why would you want to listen to something you hate with a fiery burning passion?

anyway, songs aren't going to do any good...you need to listen to some good shows, they are better than anything the dead did in the studio, and you get the improvisational jams as well....i'll give you some that were released in a traditional way...there are around 100 released, otherwise i have access to over 6,000 shows....

    dick's picks 8 - harpur college ny 5/2/70

    dick's picks 10 - winterland 12/29/77

    dick's picks 15 - englishtown, nj 9/3/77

    fillmore west 1969 - 2/27 - 3/2/69

    winterland 1973 - 11/9 - 11/11/73

    egypt 78 - giza egypt 9/15,16/78

    europe 72

    live dead

that's enough to get started, but if you need studio songs then you need american beauty and workingman's dead....it's better listened to in whole to get the context of the individual songs.

otherwise choose a few of these:

    sugar magnolia

    viola lee blues

    morming dew

    st stephen

    china cat sunflower

    cosmic charlie

    dire wolf

    new speedway boogie

    black peter

    candyman

    friend of the devil

    us blues

    scarlet begonias

    franklin's tower

    terrapin station...all of it

    fire on the mountain

    don't ease me in

    standing on the moon

also get sugaree off garcia's solo album....and make sure to listen to sugaree from winterland 12/29/77.

that's enough to get you started...or enough to increase your hate.

oh, when i get home i'll post a song from a dead show with pete townshend sitting in, and one with santana....and maybe one with jerry and sammy hagar.

Terrapin station - lady with a fan Let my inspiration flow in token rhyme, suggesting rhythm, That will not forsake you, till my tale is told and done. While the firelights aglow, strange shadows from the flames will grow, Till things weve never seen will seem familiar. Shadows of a sailor, forming winds both foul and fair all swarm. Down in carlisle, he loved a lady many years ago. Here beside him stands a man, a soldier from the looks of him, Who came through many fights, but lost at love. While the story teller speaks, a door within the fire creaks; Suddenly flies open, and a girl is standing there. Eyes alight, with glowing hair, all that fancy paints as fair, She takes her fan and throws it, in the lions den. Which of you to gain me, tell, will risk uncertain pains of hell? I will not forgive you if you will not take the chance. The sailor gave at least a try, the soldier being much too wise, Strategy was his strength, and not disaster. The sailor, coming out again, the lady fairly leapt at him. That's how it stands today. you decide if he was wise. The story teller makes no choice. soon you will not hear his voice. His job is to shed light, and not to master. Since the end is never told, we pay the teller off in gold, In hopes he will return, but he cannot be bought or sold. Terrapin station Inspiration, move me brightly. light the song with sense and color; Hold away despair, more than this I will not ask. Faced with mysteries dark and vast, statements just seem vain at last. Some rise, some fall, some climb, to get to terrapin. Counting stars by candlelight, all are dim but one is bright; The spiral light of venus, rising first and shining best, On, from the northwest corner, of a brand new crescent moon, While crickets and cicadas sing, a rare and different tune, Terrapin station. In the shadow of the moon, terrapin station. And I know well get there soon, terrapin station. I can't figure out, terrapin, if it's the end or beginning, terrapin, But the trains put it's brakes on, terrapin, And the whistle is screaming, terrapin. Terrapin station - at the siding While you were gone, these faces filled with darkness. The obvious was hidden. with nothing to believe in, Sullen wings of fortune beat like rain. Youre back in terrapin for good or ill again, for good or ill again.

My dad's the same way. Well he doesn't hate them he just doesn't care for them.

You should listen to Candyman, Operator, That's It For The Other One, St. Stephen, Casey Jones, and Unlce John's Band.

Edit: Yeah you just wait until sugaree sees this question.
