eating meat in front of vegetarians?

my dad just recently became a vegetarian. i want to invite him over for dinner one night, but i was wondering, would it be rude of me to serve him a meat-free meal && my fiance && myself a meal with meat? i dont know how to bring up the question with my dad either. i would eat a vegetarian meal with him but i dont like most vegetables, soy or tofu.

no thats not rude at all. going out of your way to make him a meatless meal when you and your fiance are eating meat is the complete opposite of rude. if he is choosing to become vegetarian, he is obviously aware that other people are not going to change their eating habits for him. im sure he would be very happy with the fact that youre making him a separate meal, and it would be awfully self centered and horribly rude on his part if he requested that you change your own eating habits to suit him. it would perhaps be different if he had always been a vegetarian, but since it is a recent change, he must be accustomed to people eating meat in front of him anyway.

There are a lot of recipes that can be modified for vegetarians - things like stir-fries where you add meat at the last minute so it's easy to dish out some for the vegetarian first. There are also a lot of great meat-free chili recipes out there. You can go to the library and look at vegetarian cookbooks, or there are tons of recipes online.

It can be a rough transition, so your dad will probably appreciate it if you don't make a big fuss over it. Just prepare whatever dinner you decide on and say something casual like "It's okay, Dad, your part won't have any meat in it."

I think it's a little rude tbh. It's ONE meal and if you spent a few minutes researching some recipes online you could definitely find something that you and your fiance would like. You don't need to make anything with tofu, there are tons of other options for a protein like beans or lentils. Something easy as garlic olive oil pasta with some broccoli or marinara sauce. Or make some lasagna and leave the meat out, it's not that difficult.

FYI you probably eat tons of soy everyday in food that you eat......

If you are inviting him over to dinner, then the proper thing to do is to make a vegetarian meal that all 3 of you can enjoy together.

Inviting him over and saying here's some wilted spinach and some runny tofu isn't exactly courteous.

Listen, it's not like you are cooking an entire dead turkey for 20 people and he's the only vegetarian. He's your guest. You should treat him as such.

Really, how hard is it to make a nice fresh green salad and a pot of pasta with marinara sauce?

Vegetarians know other people eat meat and it's not like they're never going to eat in a public place again so I really don't think it's a big deal. But in my opinion, it would really be pretty easy to make something like spaghetti with marinara, garlic bread and salad, which can easily be meat-free if you don't add any to the sauce. I'm sure he'll appreciate the gesture and it gets you out of cooking two different dishes.

That would be fine, most vegetarians don't have a problem with someone eating meat in front of them. However I do recommend that you just make a vegetarian dinner it would be a lot simpler. There are many meals that don't require tofu or meat substitutes. Meals such as spaghetti with sauce (just make sure that its meat-free sauce!), lasagna... it could easily be made without meat, macaroni and cheese, stir fry, cheese quesadilla, taco salad (with no meat just beans and cheese count as the protein), etc. There are many meals that you eat without meat and you probably don't even notice! Oh and I recommend serving a salad with the meal. :)

Vegetarians are use to being around people eating meat since most people aren't vegetarians. You also stated that he recently became a vegetarian so that leads me to assume that he use to eat meat. I don't think it would be wrong to eat meat in front of him unless he is having difficulty not eating meat.. and I don't think that is the case because if he was then he wouldn't be a vegetarian. Go ahead and eat the meat. Or if anything just have your girlfriend or you ask your dad "So is it difficult having people eat meat around you when you aren't?" before you serve the food so you know if you should eat the meat or not.

It's not rude at all. When my mom invites me to dinner she cooks a vegetarian meal and a meal including meat for whoever wants it. It doesn't bother me at all, I'm totally fine with my family eating meat in front of me.
