Hello fellow Missourian. Stick with the major brand names & look for a good "fit" - what feels right to you. Bikes with a cassette rear hub are better than those with a freewheel. Bikes with double walled rims are better than single walled rims. Look for both. A good comfort bike would give you the 26" tires, wider than 700C tires & more forgiving on gravel & rock paths. Two links below. The Venture 4.0 has the better hub & rims.
Have you ridden the St. Louis Riverfront Trail?

I would get a comfort bike, a mountain bike is over kill on bike paths and a pain to ride on the road. I have a Forge Saranac that is perfect for that type of riding. It's called a comfort mountain bike but is just a comfort bike. It's liter then a mountain bike at 26 lbs but it came with comfort tires that handle pavement and gravel trails equally well. It's about the same thing as the Trek Navigator 2.0.

The Saranac only comes in one size but if you are 5''5" - 5' 8" it's a great bike for the money.
