what would be more expensive fixing up a old car? or buying a used car?
im getting my first car and my mom keeps insisting that she wants to give me my dads HIDEOUS 1991 hyundai i mean it is horrific. it makes me want to cry whenever i even imagine myself driving that piece of scrap metal. i told my mom that it will cost her more to fix that car than it would to get me a used car that i will actually enjoy driving. this is whats wrong with the damn sorry excuse of car: it doesnt run and when it does it can leave you stranded cuz it stops out of no where, it screeches when you make turns, the brakes dont really work, the dashboard is cracked and disgusting so is the interior on the doors the seats are goddamn hideous, it has a cassette player CASSETTE! the a/c doesnt work the back doors dont open from the outside the handle you have to turn to open the windows dont work except for the one in the drivers seat and passengers seat, the paint is chipping off, the trunk cant be opened or else it takes hercules to close it, the lights on the place where it shows you mph and stuff like that dont work, the thing that tells you how fast youre driving doesnt work, and the tint on the windows is peeling off thats all i can remember right now so how much do you guys think it will be to fix that piece of junk cuz i want to get it through my mom tiny curly head how much she should be ready to spend.
i cant deal with the casette player i have never even seen a casstte in real life lol
i am gonna have to pay for insurance and gas sweetie
its annoying how you guys dont see the point im trying to save my mom money cuz to fix all the necessary things will cost way too much where as the car that i want costs 5,000. i dont want a new car like one of the answers says i know i am more likely to get into accidents as a new driver im not so retarded that i would get a new car and destroy it. and i am 18 and out of school going to college and my dad has spent thousands trying to fix that car so it wont stop out in the middle of the road and it always does. i have my reasons why i dont like that car

Tell your mom instead of fixing an old car, buy a good used car instead. In an old car, your time and money will be at stake and the problem to fix it wont stop. Aside from that, the discomfort of not having a reliable car for everyday use. Unlike when is a good used car, the only thing to consider is the insurance and periodic service maintenance but the comfort of reliability is the number one thing to consider. Hope this help!

First you must find out exactly how much it costs to fix it.
If your mom is really willing to spend a thousand or more to fix it (more than half the value of the car), then it is simply not worth it. Also, those older hyundais (before year 2000) tend to be very unreliable, and are poorly constructed to offer adequate protection in an accident.
That Corolla seems like a good choice, but I wouldn't pay more than 4,000 dollars for that condition it is in.

Im sorry but you are a spoiled little princess if you cant deal with a cassette player. Does it not have an FM tuner? I still have an AM ONLY radio (no cassete, no CD, no FM, JUST AM) in one of my trucks. No air conditioning either. But i am not afraid to take a 1000 mile road trip in it even with 330,000 miles on it. I think you should be greatful to get the "piece of scrap metal". Mommy shouldnt have to be spending anything after you get that car. You should fix it with your own money when you drive that car to work.

You should see what I drove to work several years ago. It would make you cry. It was a '76 Ford F250. It had rust holes in the floor. The panels that the hood hinges bolted to were rusted out and I had to patch them. The rear of the bed was sagging down over the frame, and I had to bolt a piece of angle iron across it to lift it and make the tailgate fit right. Even the gas tank was rusted somewhere near the top. I was paged to the front desk at Menard's one day. They asked me to move my truck away from the other vehicles in the lot. The steering gear leaked and I drove with no power steering. The radiator leaked and I had to make a larger one fit. And you know what? I loved that truck!

Look, if it gets you from A to B, that's all you need right now. I don't mean to be rude, but you sound pretty spoiled. My parents didn't give me a car. I had to buy my own. An alternative for you would be to get a part-time job, save your money, and buy the car of your choice. Make sure you get insurance quotes before you do because insurance for young drivers is RIDICULOUS. I had to pay for ins/gas as well.

Why not be thankful your mom is even going to give you the car and probably help you pay to fix it up and probably pay for you insurance and gas and you going to sit there and complain.
Grow up and face reality. Your mom is doing the best she can and you're ungrateful.

you can deal with the cassette player. its not really a big deal. but it sounds like it would take a LOT of money to fix it.

That Hyundai sounds like the perfect car for you ........ and it's a lot better vehicle than the one that you don't seem willing to purchase for yourself.
