Off hand it almost sounds like either an SS Efficiency Badge or one of the long term service awards, but it's difficult without seeing a picture. Anyway you could post it or e-mail it to me?
If not, do the oak leaves go all around the medal or is it only on the bottom? The sun shaped circle, is it smooth or are there "rays" coming from the center outwards?
Regardless, sounds like a pretty interesting historical piece!

No. Post WW2 US awards have zero design commonality with German awards. There's no "wound badge", "close combat badge", and "armor destruction badge" in the US awards library. I'm less positive about Soviet awards, but I've never seeen anything there either that one could attribute to a WW2 German design. The Germans basically had: Specialty badges Achievement badges-NOT "awards" as the term is used in the US military, e.g. those named above Service ribbons/cuff sleeves. Then gallantry awards, i.e., the various levels of the Eisen Kreuz/Ritter Kreuz. These have no equivalent to post-war medals either.

recommend checking with a local military history museum if available. I've tried doing similar research from pics posted on here asking similar questions and it's nearly impossible.
Or you can try a site like this http://www.thirdreich.ca/ and send them a pic to see if they can ID it
