Speed bag or heavy bag?

My teenage son is looking to get into boxing. I will buy him a punching bag but am unsure of whether to buy him a heavy bag or speed bag. Which one is more useful for beginners?

Hello Sir, I've been doing martial arts now for several years and I am more than happy to help your son get off on the right foot!

So here's what I have to say about which bag to get. Speed bags are very technical, they work on accuracy, timing, and speed. It's probably not the greatest bag to start your son off with.He may get aggravated and lose interest with it fairly quickly. I would get him a heavy bag, reasons?

    1. They're a lot more fun when your starting.

    2. if you've never boxed before it will condition your speed timing and accuracy to some degree (The speed bag takes your skills a step further)

    4. The heavy bag will allow him to work on foot positioning and movement as well as striking.

    5. The heavy bag is very versatile, you can do a multitude of exercises with it, the speed bag is pretty much meant for one thing.

So get a heavy bag. Remember, the bag should be about half your son's weight. example :If he weighs 200 pounds then you'll be buying a 100 pound bag. He will also need proper gloves to punch the bag, training gloves or heavy bag gloves will do well. You may also want to consider purchasing hand wraps.

Hope that helps you out, encourage him to keep with it! Boxing is too good to pass up. - Axel -

Get him the heavy bag for now. Hang it it the garage or basement. Get him some good bag gloves with wraps or slip on gel gloves to fit inside 12 or 14 oz. bag gloves made with a velcro closure for bag work only. Let him WORK the bag, not just hit away at it. Pretend it's an opponent and work on different combinations, including the body, also utilizing his footwork around the bag as it swings by. 7- -100 pounds would be good. A great bag, long lasting and durable is made in a 22 oz. vinyl/nylon. Go to Proboxingequipment.com They have a great 100 pound bag, toward the end of their training section, which is very reasonable and is used in many pro gyms of California. Speed bag is fun, but can be very frustrating at first. Might turn him off at this point.

Definitely a Heavy Bag. Speed bags are good for hand-eye coordination. But for beginners, it creates bad habits from day 1. On a speed bag, when hitting the bag correctly, your elbows are lifted lifted and out to the side, away from your body. The correct boxing stance, which is the very most important part of learning to box, requires you to always keep your elbows down to protect your rib cage. Even when punching, you still never want to hold both elbows up and/or pointing outward.

On the other hand, a heavy bag teaches you how to punch a moving target, while circling it and timing your punches to hit the bag on balance. It also allows you to hit more than one "target". In a boxing fight, you can hit your opponent anywhere above the waist with head or body punches and with straights, hooks, or uppercuts.

Learning how to correctly stand, torque you body, defend yourself, deliver punches correctly, etc., is far more important that trying to get rhythmic hand speed when beginning. I've boxed for 15 years, and I still work the heavy bag about every day. But I rarely mess with the speed bag. I can literally hit it for 3 minutes straight, with a blindfold covering my eyes.

Honestly, after the heavy bag, if he becomes further interested and you see potential for improvement, if you were to buy another bag after, I would get either a reflex bag or a double end bag before getting the speed bag. Don't get me wrong, it's a great tool. But I've trained others now for over 2 years also, and I've noticed the same problems from beginners who spend alot of time with a speed bag when working punch mitts with them; when they throw a punch, esp. combos, their form is very sloppy and their bodies are a wide open target. This form that develops also takes power away from their punch.

    Hope that helps!

forget the speed bag, you pretty much don't even need it, the heavy bag is where you are going to work your combos, your footwork, turns, and different scenarios. You'll improve power, punch efficiency and real speed.
