What position should I play for rugby?

I'm wondering what position I should play for ruby? I am 5'11 205 pounds. I was a middle linebacker on my high school team till it shut down so now I'm gonna play on the men's rugby team. Oh, and any tips for playing would be nice too. Also thanks in advance.

After playing rugby for half my life I have realized that positions in rugby aren't chosen by size but other skills said player has... for instance if your main attribute is speed, agility, and handling skills then a position like out-side centre, wing or fullback may be preferable for you. if your main attribute is power then a position in the forwards may be suited more towards you, where abouts in the forwards then may be decided my your size. id suggest front row as a flanker, flankers are generally faster than the front row of a scrum and main jobs are to tackle and be the 1St people at the ruck or maul breakdowns, if after a while you find out that passing, kicking and being able to read the game and tell where the oppositions defence is weak whilst on the move then you may be more suited to a more specialist position in the backs such as fly half or scrum half. the best way I can suggest to learn about the sport is to actually play it and watch rugby of a decent level... for instance there are a lot of videos and demonstrations online, hope some of this has been helpful to you :)

Well, based on just your height and weight my first place would to put you as a prop. If youre big you'll probably be a forward (lots of tackling and the scrums. Scrums are best). If youre quick and agile then you'll most likely be a back (lots of running and ball handling).

I honestly dont know anything about football- but I love rugby and it is such a great sport. Be patient and willing to learn. I've been playing for two and a half years and I still dont really know all the rules. Also make sure that youre doing everything as safe as possible. If you tackle correctly everything should be fine- you will be taught proper technique and make sure you always try to perfect that. It will make you, your team and your opponents happy!

Good luck! I'm sure you'll do great. I hope you enjoy rugby as much as I do! It's my favorite sport! :D <3

I only have a limited understanding of a MLB's role sorry, but from what I've seen, the position calls for mobility, speed, tactics and a great tackling game.

These things (especially the tacking game), coupled with your size, really make me think you might want to look at the midfield. Outside Centre (#13) especially. The midfield is a very important area for defence as when the opposition back line spin the ball wide, quite often the advantage line is hit around the time the centres get the ball. Likewise, you will want to be very comfortable at hitting the ball up and trying to bust holes in defence more than any other back. You need to be relatively fast. As quick as your #10 and #12, but not as fast as your wings or fullback necessarily. The outside centre is often the most powerful man in the backline.

You definitely aren't too small for the forwards either. Too short for Lock. A bit light for men's grade prop (here in NZ at least). But it depends on your team makeup. Hooker is a possability, but I'm not sure you will enjoy being in the engine room after the relative freedom of MLB.

You might enjoy being a loose forward, particularly Blind or Open side flanker. They are bound less tightly to the rest of the forward pack and are VERY mobile during a game, are usually the first to the tackle area (so must be fit!) and are constantly involved in the game. You will be the ball dog and you will be chasing it all over the park. You will also be smashing it up into defensive lines.

    Take a look at these.

You can pretty much replace the position in that URL with any position and get a video!

Basic tips are a bit hard mate. But if there is one thing I can recommend practicing as a beginner (and you can do by yourself), it's kicking. Not for goal, but chips ahead and for touch. It's usually the #10's role, but if you find yourself isolated or the team is on the back-foot, it's a godsend for relieving pressure. Just remember, if you're behind the 22, you can kick out on the full. If you are over the 22 and go out on the full, your opposition gets the ball from where you kicked - negating the tactic.

If you opt for a flanking role. Study the rules. Hard (in fact you should for any position). But there are alot of rules surrounding the tackle area that will become a constant part of you life and will decide penalties (or missed opportunities to steal possession).

    Good luck and have fun.

I would say u would have to be a flanker u sound like u r very muscly if u r 250 pounds and flankers are tough and fast ur job would be to run of scrums and smash the first Receiver.I am a flanker for a Professional team so ask me if u need any tips how to be the best u can be at the position and good luck.

I played mlb in high school too, and i play flanker in rugby. the flanker is a lot like the head hunter on kickoff. all you do is chase the ball and make tackles. lots of tackles. plus its a great position for beginners, just be aggressive and your football instincts will really help you out.

switching from football to rugby is pretty hard. the best advice i can give is to practice as much as you can, get yourself in good shape, and watch it on youtube or something to get more familiar with it. good luck and stick with it

I also played MLB in football and started playing Rugby in college. Flanker ( wing forward) would be the easiest position to start at with MLB skills. Once you learn some ball handling skills you may try inside center in the backs.

The rugby equivilent (as near as there is one) for linebacker is flanker.

Conditioning would be much like you were used to for football, except that your aerobic fitness is going to have to be taken up several notches. You are going to have to run between 5 and 7 miles during the course of an 80 minute game.

if you are saying your getting slower but your getting bigger, i recommend u play scrum half, because till being able to run the 100m in 14 secs is pretty fast and if u are only 5ft 9 it will help you improve in that position. Plus it will give you more of an experiance setting up attacks as a playmaker. go for scrum half it sounds like you would play well there.

Prop probably on the tighthead. Best position where the real men play. Advice for in the scrums really **** off the opozing prop they is nothing easier to push against than someone focusing on hurting you rather than winning the scrum. And in lineouts lift from as low as possible to get maxime height.

i dont think in america no one cares about possitions in rugby. get to know a rugby team like wigan warriors and look at all the players and the one you most relate to, then look at that position and wiki it and find out more, rugby is a 5 tackle sport unless playing union then its unlimited, the ball can only go back not forward, if you drop the ball its called a knock on and if u want more ideas on rugby then wiki rugby league, support wigan warriors, top of the super league table atm.
