How do I make an mp3 into a ringtone on a Pantech Link?
i've tried splicing the mp3 into a smaller size, but i still can't set it as my ring tone.

You might not be able to. When you download a ring tone it is formatted as a ring tone to begin with. If this were possible you would need some kind of software that could convert an MP3 to a ring tone. I don't know of. It only makes sense for cell phone companies to make this a difficult task for there customer because they want to make you there customer as much as possible to keep taking your money. In other words they want to sell it to you.
Your cell phone might have some kind of software that detects MP3 and automatically rejects it so that they can sell you there version of MP3 for ring tones. It sucks I know. I've been trying to do the same thing with my Sony Ericsson.
Good Luck!
If you can do it let me know how ;-)

Easiest way I've found is to put a microSD card it in, format it. That makes several folders on it, just use a PC to place the MP3s you want to use in it in the Download Ring Tones folder under audio. Worked like a charm for me. Then just go to the file on the phone and set as ringtone.
Not sure if size is an issue but all the ones I placed were under 300kb and worked fine.

Good posts, folks. I found an even easier way.
Make an mp3, any kind you want.
Install a file manager (not the stock one, but something like ES File Explorer).
When you go to select a ringtone, it will ask whether you want to use the stock browser, which won't let you select your own files, or your new file manager, which /will/ let you do so.
Thanks and Best.
