You can talk through Skype, but you can't assist someone in any other way. (It's helpful, though, if you're using a remote help program, if you can also talk.)
If the other person is running Vista or Windows 7, use remote assistance on their computer (they'll have to issue you a request for help). Or you can use a VNC program - I prefer TightVNC (http://www.tightvnc.com/download.html ) but that's just a personal preference.

While Skype allows each party to "share" their desktop screen, I don't believe it allows a remote viewer to take control of the other parties mouse the way remote assistance does.
I've been using TeamViewer for about a year now and it works great.
It's very simple to use.
The new version 5 has VoIP and Video support built-in now.
It is free when used for non-commercial use.
It uses encrypted connections and can traverse NAT-Routers and firewalls without mucking with ports or forwarding.

Don't throw SKYPE. Use something like UltraVNC if you want to do remote computer assistance.

Looks pretty nice. Except the part that says Dell (I've had my share of Dell). Before you throw all your money into a custom built laptop, go check out the Asus G74S-AX1 series laptops. Now that's true gaming. (better than Alienware, if you ask me)
