How did the human race begin?

Question

I don't mean as a nation, but how did we get here at all? I don't believe in God, but a part of me thinks how else could humanity have become? It is something that has really bothered me. Was it by chance? Did the right particles come together in order to create us?
I mean, is there some science to suggest as to how? I know certain particles came together and all, but I am just having trouble understanding who the first people were and how they got here, what came together.

Sorry if this sounds hippie-like. It is just something I have thought about a lot.

We got here due to evolution. Evolution happened, not by chance, but by natural selection. There was no luck involved. The creation of life happened almost 4 billion years ago with the development of single celled creatures, like bacteria. Theories on how life was created, or how matter came together to make simple cells, are called abiogenisis. Hominids have only been around several million years. We evolved from, and share a common ancestor with all primates. All life forms are related because everything alive today shares a common ancestor - yes, you are related to a fungus too!

If you don't believe in God, but think that a God might have done it, then ask yourself this: Who created God?
