Any recommendations for a good web hosting service for my site?
I'm looking to create a site and have already purchased a domain. The site will be a combination of a blog, a programming tutorial and a download site for open source and purchasable software developed by my friend and me.
I am fairly new to this arena and not exactly sure where to start. I googled "web hosting" and was obviously flooded with hundreds of sites peddling their services. To say the least, it's a bit daunting to try and sift out the best service. So, what service do you recommend and why?
Thank you for your help.

As a word of warning, a lot of sites that review web hosting services are often targeted by marketing departments of various hosting companies. So, Company A will write a bad review about Company B, and Company B will do the same about Company A (all using login IDs that can't be traced back to the company, of course). Knowing this certainly made my choice a lot more difficult.
I've had good success with GoDaddy for SSL certificates and domain names. However, they do not offer a 1-800 support number, which means you have to make long distance calls for support.
I host with iWeb (www.iweb.com). They have 24/7 support and a chat interface which is much faster than phone. The problems I've encountered have been quickly resolved; they have an architecture that claims 100% uptime, and data restore costs only $5 when requested (I deleted a clients webmail directory accidentally, so this came in very handy).
The other advantage of iWeb is their data center is located in Canada. This means that the data stored with them is not subject to provisions found in the Patriot Act that allows the US government to spy on your data.

Try Ultra Website Hosting.Based on what I saw on the homepage and read in reviews on various websites most people seemed who have used them seem to be fairly pleased with their service.
If you take a look at the homepage http://www.ultrawebsitehosting.com/3180.html you can see that they offer good services like those below just like all the other web-hosting providers in what they call the Ultra Hosting Plan.
Unlimited Hosting Space
Unlimited Bandwith
Unlimited Websites
Free Site Builder Tool etc
Free Domain Registration
And their price is low. Only $2.95 a month.

I can only recommend that web host I am currently using. The name of the company is ChimeHost http://www.chimehost.com/web-hosting/ and the main reason I like them is because of the support they offer. They are very friendly and are willing to go extra step to help their client. Their pricing is very good too. They don't force you to sign-up for 2 or 3 years for a low price and no upsell like other web hosting company. Most providers will start selling you other stuff once you sign-up with them like premium hosting, premium support etc etc. Since you already have a domain, just try them out for free using one of their coupons on their website. You don't pay anything if you are using the coupon.

Hi,
Don't go for free web hosting. They are not reliable....
I would recommend "Host Gator" for your Web Hosting because it's cheap and very reliable. Their support service is awesome. This company offers site building tools, application vault, web mail, antivirus, Php, MysQL ,e-commerce and hosts unlimited websites in one plan.Check out personal reviews direct from the users here :

I think the best one would be Pandora Hosting. Large companies are notorious for their bad customer service and overloading their servers with too many clients. For Pandora Hosting, if you call, you will reach a person immediately, and we limit the number of clients per server to ensure top performance. Packages start at 20GB of storage and 50GB of bandwidth (plenty of space and traffic allowance) with competitive prices and great customer support. You can email me at JohnWeinrich@pandorahosting.net for more your specific hosting needs and discount pricing.

You have to be careful to choose perfect web hosting company for you. There are numerous offers on the web, most of them end into smoke.
A good web hosting company must have the following:
- 99% uptime
- Enough disk space (many offer unlimited)
- Enough bandwidth (*** many tend to limit to 1GB only)
- SSL security
- Security to protect you from DDOS attacks
- Faster approach

Both Hostgator and Godaddy are large and reliable companies.
I host with both and Hostgator offers nice reseller options.
