How will pain medications, such as Vicodin or Oxycontin effect my performance in school?
Due to a torn ACL, I will be going through surgery a couple of weeks before my final examinations in school. However, I will be taking some kind of strong pain medication, such as Vicodin or Oxycontin for awhile after my surgery, most definitely during finals week. Does anyone know how this will effect my ability to study for my exams and actually take them? Should I be concerned with how they will effect by scores? It is possible to take my exams early, and even possibly to reschedule my surgery. Opinions?

Opiates such as Vicodin and Oxy will do anything but help you focus. It all depends on your unique biochemistry. Some people get really loopy and do/say strange things on these drugs. Others get tired and fall asleep. Still others get really relaxed and carefree or have no effect. Most professors will be lenient with you if you have a medical condition like this and might let you take the tests early or after you get off the meds. It seems like you will be on the meds for a few weeks so some effects might fade. At least you will know how it affects you at this time. If you are feeling tired or weird or cannot focus, you can ask your doctor for a short term prescription of amphetamine or methylphenidate (commonly sold under the brand names adderal and ritalin respectively) which will counteract the narcotic part of the drug but not mess with the analgesia (painkilling).

not sure about oxycontin but vicodin will keep you focused.
